CleanTDF EP 23 – Jimmy Pardo | My guest this episode is Jimmy Pardo, host and creator of the fantastic podcast Never Not Funny. He's such a fascinating comic that it took most of the show for me to get to the fact that he’s a Fantasy Baseball dork. Fantasy Baseball seems to be that you get a list of players and you WATCH their stats for the season. Fascinating! You will note how much I like Jimmy because I won’t let him talk. I beginning to see it as a symptom of something. I sound like I still have some sort of head infection, don’t I? Boo. I had an ear infection and it’s moved to my sinuses (as my acupuncturist said - English not her first language – though MUCH better than my Cantonese, “behind your face is one piece of meat.” i.e. the infection has spread). My Ear, Nose and Throat doctor tested my hearing and I’ve lost 30% in my right ear. But he doesn’t know what to do about it. His recommendation? That I send a video to SNL to audition for them. i.e. I need a new ENT guy. CleanTDF Ep 9 - Beatallica | TDF Ep 9 – the band… Beatallica Boy do I NOT know about Heavy Metal. These guys do, though. I had the band Beatallica (www.beatallica.org) in my living room. They are a Beatles/Metallica live mash up band. Live – they play all the music, the lead singer sounds JUST like the lead singer of Metallica and they have taken their dorkdom to success all over the country and in Europe. They just played LA. They are really gifted musicians and… I used to babysit the lead singer’s little sister. So, I knew him when he was just a foot soldier in the Kiss Army. They are all from Milwaukee, as am I, and we digress on that for a while. I try to keep up and, as usual, when the dorkdom is music, it’s best when I just leave them to it. I learned a lot. CleanTDF Ep 8 - Adam Gertler and Stirling Gardner | I talked with Adam Gertler and Stirling Gardner about food, self improvement and more food. Adam is so specifically a food dork I forget he loves comics and graphic novels. Gotta get him back on to talk of those things. But he had a great, simple butternut squash soup recipe so I got distracted :) And I gave him a couple squash from the garden in return. Stirling took a big handful of Kale... he didn't tell me how he's going to prepare them. Adam has his current show on Food Network - Kid in a Candy Store and Will Work For Food is in rerunning rotation. Stirling has had a wide and varied obsessive life and it took me most of the show to pinpoint that he loves him some self help body and mind work. We spoke of the spoon treatment to his back - Gua Sha - and he sent me a picture of his back but it looks pretty bad... why don't you just Google it. Adam and I were disturbed. YET... intrigued. That's what LA will do to you. And the Dork Forest... you end up intrigued about "body treatments." Then it was CRAZY... Stirling worked on some Tony Robbins seminars and how you can use your powers for good or evil. I got creeped out and made Adam tell me about the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup factory. As long as I've known him, he has always been a snappy dresser. I thought his wife was a "magic dork" but we will find out - because, Paul's wife, an actress and lovely human being herself, Janie Haddad (Tompkins for family purposes) has a love of the unknown perk. A perk you didn't know was there... hence her love of LA's Magic Castle and other restaurants and bars and venues that are little known gems out in the world. We talk of these things... and fashion. A hilarious meeting of the dorky minds.
The kind of thing podcasts do best, discuss deep dorkiness with very funny host. Not just covering comics, sci-fi, D &D and the usual nerd topics but anything the guests are passionate about. Each episode has a dork info exchange where one side learns something like what's LARPing in exchange for the history of Donkey Kong or who Del Close is or what's cool about knitting. Well worth a listen.
In essence, I want to marry this woman.
At the same time, Jackie Kashian and both stolen and broken my heart. But does so every week, so logic goes to say that sometimes during that following week she returns it to me in my sleep. Every show that comes out staples a grin onto my face and makes me think of the good ol’ days; a recent episode had guests go on about zombies, Green Rangers, Dungeons, Dragons, comic books and more. She is just a lovely woman with an awesome set of friends. In essence, I want to marry this woman.
Great Show, Especially For Dorks!
This is just fantastic stuff. Jackie Kashian has such a great dork-personality (not all dork-personalities are great, right?) and she's also hilarious! My dorkdom has really taken off recently, as after 26 years of abstinence, I just became a huge comic book nerd. My interest in this show has accelerated concurrently. Coincidence? Probably.
I've spoken to Jackie Kashian a few times on Twitter and she seems like a true sweetheart, much like she does on this show. I put Jackie and her good friend Maria Bamford in a comedic class of their own. Because they both seem like such truly kind people, their comedy feels like a big, hilarious hug from a loving friend!
