They are both artists and artisans; they live in the motor sport background, blending into a scenery that they themselves create; and, most of the time, they must be so passionate about their world that they are prepared to work for nothing. One such is Darren Heath, a genius I was fortunate to meet in the late 1990s, when we were all working at Haymarket's new monthly magazine, F1 Racing. It was easy, teaming with Darren - just as I'd always had a smooth time with such snappers as Nigel Snowdon, David Phipps, Peter Cramer, Keith Sutton, Michael Cooper and Maurice Rowe: my mediocre copy, I knew, would inevitably be carried by the creativity of Darren Heath. | 7 | VideoTFL 52: Scuderia Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne & Williams F1's Dr Mark Gillan | France is in the F1 spotlight again! Three French drivers (Jean-Eric Vergne, Romain Grosjean and Charles Pic) will be racing in 2012; and there is talk, too, of a return of the French GP. At the forefront of the Renaissance, shoulder-to-shoulder with Grosjean, is the precociously-talented Vergne, a 21-year-old whose path to F1, backed by Red Bull from an early stage, has been straight and true: a successful karting career led to FRenault Campus, FRenault Eurocup, British F3 and, last year, World Series by Renault. Jean-Eric won that British F3 Championship in 2010 (driving for Trevor Carlin) and he finished runner-up in the 2011 WSR Championship, again racing for Carlin. After some late 2011 season Friday morning outings with Scuderia Toro Rosso and then a sparkling test for both STR and Red Bull Racing at Abu Dhabi, Jean-Eric (known by the diminutive "JEV") clinched the STR race drive for 2012. A gentleman, a passionate racer and above all a remarkable Grand Prix driver, Rubens is as hungry today as he was when he began with karts and then Formula Vauxhall Lotus in the late 1980s early 90s. He scored his first pole and podium finish when driving for Jordan in 1994; he finished a brilliant second at Monaco for Stewart in 1997 - and he scored his first Grand Prix win in a gloriously skilful display for Ferrari at Hockenheim in 2000. He has won three Italian Grands Prix at Monza - two for Ferrari, one for Brawn - and he scored a sensational British Grand Prix victory at Silvestone for Ferrari in 2003. In addition, Rubens is the driver who gave Michael Schumacher a win in Austria, 2002 - and who then won the US Grand Prix that same year in compensation. In total, Rubens has won 11 F1 races, finished on the podium 68 times, taken 14 poles, set 17 fastest laps and scored 658 points. More than that, Rubens Goncalves Barrichello has started 322 Grands Prix - (excluding the four weekends in which he never got to race). | 12 | VideoTFL 47: Damon Hill, OBE | With the 2011 F1 season finally at an end, we talk live in the studio with the 1996 World Champion, Damon Hill. The son of Graham Hill, OBE, the double World Champion who also won the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours, Damon began his motor racing career relatively late and far from Prevailing Wisdom. Eschewing karts, Damon excelled on motor bikes before switching to Formula Ford and then Formula 3. It took a while for the establishment to recognize Damon as a great talent in his own right but the chance came with Sir Frank Williams in 1993, when Damon parlayed a Williams test contract into a full-time race drive. He was instantly on the pace of his esteemed team-mate, Alain Prost, and that year not only won his first Grand Prix but also the two that followed, giving him an amazing, opening hat-trick. Damon helped to steer the Rothmans Williams Renault team through the loss of Ayrton Senna in 1994 and thereafter fought closely with Michael Schumacher's Benetton, culminating in the infamy of Adelaide, 1994, when Schumacher drove into Hill when the World Championship was at stake. Damon received full payback in 1996, when he not only started every race from the front row but also won eight Grands Prix and the World Championship. Damon should have won in Hungary for Arrows in 1997 but did score one final victory for Jordan - in the wet at Spa, 1998, giving him a total of 22 wins, 20 poles and 19 fastest laps. Now recently retired as President of the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), and from playing a pivotal role in the status of Silverstone as the British GP venue, Damon is now actively behind the career of the third generation of Racing Hills - his son, Josh. | 13 | VideoTFL 46: Macau GP Debrief; Brazilian GP Preview with Valtteri Bottas & Daniel Juncadella | In the midst of a busy week for motor sport, we talk to two key men of the moment - AT&T Williams Reserve Driver, Valtteri Bottas, and Daniel Juncadella, winner of last Sunday's Macau Grand Prix. A protege of Mika Hakkinen, the 1998-99 F1 World Champion, Finland's Valtteri Bottas excelled in karts before graduating to single-seaters. Although Valtteri is the only driver ever to win two F3 Masters events, his Euro F3 season in 2010 was nonetheless difficult. He more than made up for that in 2011, however, with a brilliant win in the GP3 Championship. Valtteri also tested for Williams after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, matching the times of regular drivers Pastor Maldonado and Rubens Barrichello, before flying off to Macau to drive for the Galaxy Double-R team. Despite a late arrival, he was right on the pace and looking at a win when he make a small mistake and touched the wall. Daniel Juncadella went on to score a momentous victory in Macau, immediately elevating his standing not only in Spain but also on the world stage. Daniel is the product of a Spanish racing dynasty - two of his uncles (Alex Soler-Roig and Luis Perez-Sala) raced in F1 and a third - Jose Juncadella - was very fast in the 1970s with a Ferrari 512M (amongst other quick machinery) - but is very much his own man. | 11/23/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

"DJT" during the golden days of "Motoring News", David has been covering all aspects and disciplines of motor sport for nearly 40 years. The youngest driver ever to start a World Championship Grand Prix (Jaime was 19yrs, 125 days when he made his debut for Scuderia Toro Rosso in Hungary, 2009), Jaime has evolved into a consistent and fast racer. He qualified a brilliant seventh in China this year and then backed that up with a P6 in the changing conditions at Spa and then P10 in India. Jaime has also scored points in seven races so far this year, most recently in India, where he finished an excellent eighth. We spoke to Jaime at his home in Barcelona just prior to his departure for Abu Dhabi. He talks about his early days, the pressures that came with his F1 debut, his performances this year - and his love of music (specifically the music he mixes as one of Europe's most acclaimed house DJs). We are also joined live by the very experienced F1 composites engineer, Ian Thomson. With successful spells at Williams, Ferrari, Sauber and Super Aguri behind him, Ian is playing a major role in the new Moldex composites facility in India. | 16 | VideoTFL 43: Indian GP Debrief with ScarbsF1, Narain Karthikeyan & Alice Powell | The Airtel Indian GP was more than just another "new frontier" F1 race: this was a game-changer. The Indians embraced F1; they loved F1 - and the potential, now, is huge. Part of the success story is due to the genesis of the Buddh Circuit, which is privately developed and owned by the sports-crazy JP Group. And part of it is due to the strength and passion of a handful of motor sport-loving Indians - the Chandhoks, Dr Vijay Mallya... and Narain Karthikeyan, who last Sunday became the first Indian ever to race in his national GP. He maximised his opportunity, too, matching his nearest competition for speed and finishing 17th, despite a lack of recent race and test mileage. And so now the fuse has been lit. 1.3bn Indians and a thriving economy are poised to adopt F1 as a part of the national culture. Can F1 deliver with follow-up promotion and media penetration? | 17 | VideoTFL 42: Nigel Mansell, OBE | Our guest in Episode 42 is Nigel Mansell, the 1992 F1 World Champion and the winner of 31 Grands Prix. A hero still amongst F1 fans all over the world, Nigel rose to F1 the hard way - without sponsorship and without the early support of inner-circle British decision-makers. He had, though, a God-given talent and a cast iron determination to succeed; and, as such, he stands today as a model for all those with even a glint of ambition in their eyes. His season in 1980 was pivotal: he was quick in F3 but he was replaced in the March team mid-season when they hired a driver with money. He tested and raced occasionally for the new Ralt-Honda F2 team; and he worked long hours as a truck-driver/test driver at Team Lotus. Colin Chapman gave him an F1 chance first in Austria and then at Zandvoort. He drove the skin off those Lotus cars - and was rewarded with a full-time race drive for 1981. The rest is history. He switched to Williams in 1985, won his first race at Brands that year, joined Ferrari in 1989-90 and then returned to Williams in 1991. In 1992, setting records that still stand today, Mansell dominated the World Championship. As if that was not enough, Nigel went on to win the 1993 IndyCar World Series for Newman-Haas and almost to take the Indy 500 at his first attempt. A driver who didn't know the meaning of giving up - or of finishing second - Nigel in retirement has devoted much of his life to charitable causes, to his family - and to his second sporting love (golf). | 10/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 18 | VideoTFL 41: Sir Jackie Stewart | In this special episode we talk to Sir Jackie Stewart, three-times World Champion and the winner of 27 Grands Prix for BRM and Tyrrell. A tireless campaigner for safety and charitable causes throughout his racing career, and in the years that followed his retirement in 1973, Sir Jackie is today acclaimed globally as one of the most significant figures in the history of our sport. In the aftermath of the shocking accident in Las Vegas that cost the life of Dan Wheldon, he talks about lessons that can be learned in all disciplines of the sport - and about the F1 politics over the years that, astonishingly, have led to Sir Jackie never being asked to take a formal role (in the area of safety) within the sport. Despite that omission, there is no doubt that no single individual has done more for the safety of drivers, pit crew and spectators. Instantly quick in GP2, winning the 2008 Asia series for ART (ASM) and two rounds of the GP2 Main Series, he switched to the Spanish Barwa Addax team for 2009. Romain won the feature races at Barcelona and Monaco before being invited to replace Nelson Piquet in the Renault F1 team, debuting in the European Grand Prix at Valencia. Romain's graduation was not easy and for 2010 he found himself in a position of having to re-invent his career in lower-profile GT and AutoGP events. These were difficult times, but the Frenchman showed enormous strength of character - so much so that DAMS invited him to stand-in for Jerome d'Ambrosio at Hockenheim. Romain quickly demonstrated his customary pace - but combined that with an altogether different, more worldly-wise attitude. He continued with DAMS in 2011, winning both the Asia and Main Series and now again finds himself on the crest of the F1 wave.
