At long last!
This is hands down the best radio show out there, even to a Canadian. It is exceedingly hard to listen to this show up here and now it's available for free! The idea of paying for a program that is freely broadcast didn't make me too happy. I still bought the odd episode, but I resigned myself to having to do without. Not anymore, though... yay!
Best. Radio. Show. Ever.
This American Life is so hard to describe, because you can never really "get it" until you actually listen to it. Each episode revolves around a single theme (eg. Apologies, Summer Camp, or Regrets), and a bunch of contributing authors or journalists write or report stories that have to do with that theme. The stories are generally true, but there is also a large amount of fictional work played. The stories are interesting, intelligent, and extremely well-written, and they are often funny, sad, ironic, and surprising. There is almost always a deeper emotional or social message underlying each story, as they are essentially studies of human nature. The show deals with topics ranging from politics to emotions to social turning points, and even though much of it revolves around American stories and people, the stories are still applicable and fascinating for a Canadian listener. This American Life is a funny, touching, and extremely intelligent show... you simply have to suscribe to the podcast to understand how incredible it is.
Best. Show. Ever... finally a podcast
Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard a TAL episode I didn't enjoy. Now I can enjoy it on the go, rather than being teathered to my PC by a streaming feed. If you like John Hodgman, Sarah Vowell, David Sedaris and the like you can't go wrong with TAL.
