Deep House

Emerging from Chicago shortly after the advent of house in the mid-'80s, with a shared rootstock in the residency of Frankie Knuckles at the Warehouse, splinter-genre deep house swiftly became the connoisseur's club music of choice. Always sophisticated, occasionally jazzy, and often soulful, deep house is a supremely pure form of beat seduction. We kick off with the seminal "Break 4 Luv" by Raze. Revered DJ and producer Derrick Carter makes his presence felt here: He teams up with (regular partner) Chris Nazuka for "Life Is Like a Circle" and is thrown into the mix with Henrik Schwarz, Ame, and Dixon for the infectiously tribal "Where We At (Version 3)". Sound sculptor Theo Parrish, who breathed new life into the Detroit scene in the mid-'90s, offers a percussion master class on "Reaction to Plastic". New Jersey's Dennis Ferrer started out as a techno producer in the early '90s and applies a less-is-more philosophy to his beguiling deep house work: The uncluttered accumulation of sonic layers on "Transitions" grows effortlessly, almost organically, to produce a thing of beauty. Chunky beats and sampled brass form a highly alluring alliance on Mark Farina's "Cali Spaces".
