Alternative Rock at its best

„Glow and Flutter“ is the name of the debut album by the Munich rock band Excuse Me Fire. The title already hints at the musical conception: the songs glare, burn on one’s skin, struggle. Nevertheless (or for exactly that reason) they arouse too much interest to push them aside. “Her eyes follow, like in the years ago” soberly stated by “Hearts on Oaks”. The LP builds up strong metaphors about the never ending desires and hopes, to finally break them down in face of bitter reality (“ashes and debris so cold and clear, when the morning dust slowly disappears”/ Vineta). Results gleam in the shade of tragedy, melancholia and apathy. The instruments underline the scenes. Wide harmonies back the listeners on their odyssey to Freudian fear. So does the rhythm. It pushes on, takes breath and collapses in the end. Hence the songs lead through various atmospheres. All this manifests in an Alternative Rock sound at its best, influenced by Post-Punk, Indierock or even up to Industrial. The LP doesn’t choose the easy way. No comfort or simplicity. “Glow and Flutter” appeals to all senses. Its branches and thorns want to provoke feelings. The bitter stroke of fate reminds of brighter days („your promise, my hope, the spanish castles we built and broke“/ Vineta).

„Glow and Flutter“ heißt das Debütalbum der Münchner Rockband Excuse Me Fire. Schon der Titel verrät das musikalische Konzept: Die Lieder leuchten grell, brennen auf der Haut, winden sich und sind doch oder gerade deshalb zu interressant, um beiseite geschoben zu werden. „Her eyes follow, like in the years ago“ stellt der Song „Hearts on Oaks“ nüchtern und bitter fest. Es sind die nie enden wollenden Begierden, Wünsche und Hoffnungen, die das Album in kräftigen Bildern aufzeigt und auf harte Einsichten prallen lässt („ashes and debris so cold and clear, when the morning dust slowly disappears”/ Vineta). Das Resultat erscheint in den Farben der Tragik, Melancholie und Apathie. Der Sound der LP spiegelt die Geschichten wider. Getragen von weiten Harmonien begibt sich der Hörer auf argonautische Irrfahrt und erfährt sich in Freud’schen Ängsten. Die Rhythmik folgt dem Plot. Sie treibt an, hält inne und überschlägt sich schließlich. Oft führt so ein Song durch mehrere Stimmungen hindurch. Dies alles geschieht im stillsicheren Alterna-Rock-Sound mit Anleihen aus dem Post-Punk, Indie bis Industrial. Das Album entscheidet sich gegen den Weg mundgerechter musikalischer Häppchen. Steht abseits von angenehmer Arglosigkeit und Einfachheit. „Glow and Flutter“ will gefühlt werden. Seine Ecken und Kanten wollen nicht abschrecken, sondern zur Empfindung anregen. Es scheint wie in der Liebe zu sein: die Härte des Verlusts erinnert an die Wärme der ersten Begegnung („your promise, my hope, the spanish castles we built and broke“/ Vineta).
