Jazz bassist Peter Schwebs has accomplished a lot
at a young age. Concerts at international festivals in
Montreux, Umbria, Costa Rica and Peru, as well
as performances in New York with jazz greats like
Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Chris Potter and Randy
Brecker, have provided him with a solid foundation
for his first album. “This is a musician that needs to
be heard,” says drummer Tony Moreno.
Bassist and composer Peter Schwebs lives in New
York, Berlin and Hannover. As a sideman and coleader
in various bands and projects, Peter Schwebs
has won a great number of national and international
awards. On “Stories from Sugar Hill”, Peter Schwebs tells
his musical experiences from his time in New York
when he lived in Harlem on Sugar Hill. During his time in New
York City, Peter Schwebs had the chance to play with
internationally acclaimed artists including Kenny
Werner, Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Lenny Pickett,
Chris Potter and Randy Brecker. For these collaborations,
he had the privilege of performing at some
of New York’s most prestigious jazz venues such as
The Blue Note, Dizzy’s at Lincoln Center and Smalls.
For his debut album as a composer and bandleader,
Peter Schwebs invited some of his favorite musicians
like legendary tenor saxophonist George Garzone and
drummer Ari Hoenig as well as young talents from
the New York jazz scene: pianist Julian Pollack, saxophonist
Ben Kraef, guitarist Douglas Bradford and
drummer Nick Anderson.
Each of the eight instrumental pieces that Peter
Schwebs composed for his first album offer an astoundingly
powerful musical story: sonorous, mature,
atmospheric, and always following the melodic conception
of lively modern jazz. On his album, Peter Schwebs never places himself
bluntly in the foreground – his delicate, low-pitched
tones and his well-thought compositions give his fellow
musicians room for dialogue and an album full of
musical surprises.
