Ep 138 - Perfectly Natural | In this episode, Myke and I discuss the idea that perfection is where amateurs stop. That pros keep pushing to the point of failure, because that’s where the learning starts and the task becomes natural. We also try a new recording technique for the next few episodes due to some changes being made at 70db HQ. Therefore, Myke sounds great and I sound like Lady Gaga. Ep 137 - Full-Screen, Paperless, Pens | In this episode, we talk about a variety of things that have captured our notice and fancy lately. Including Lion’s full screen mode, Paperless — the new iBook by David Sparks, and, well, we also get way too nerdy about pens. This episode is brought to you by Pear Note by Useful Fruit Software. Ep 136 - Superheroes | Episode 136 — Superheroes In this episode, we talk about the idea that we are all superheroes. That all of us, sometimes many times a day, push ourselves past our self-imposed limits, struggles, difficulties, and fears and become better than our internal dialog often tells us we are. When the task or time calls for it, we step into the booth as a person incapable and step out the other side as another doing things we never dreamed we could. Ep 135 - Reflection | In this episode, Myke and I discuss the nature of reflection (self and otherwise). The idea that reflection is as much looking at the present and planning for the future as it is thinking about the past. By taking the time to reflect on where we are, we can better see where it is we want to be. Reflection is often about evaluating the now against the then. By reflecting on where we were, we can easily see if we have grown beyond. That, perhaps, all of these tweets, status updates, etc. are opportunities for such reflection. Ep 130 - I Have To Run | In this episode, I talk to Myke about my training and running regimen as of late. Ive been training for something really kind of crazy. Perhaps the hardest physical test of my life. It should surprise no one that I try to take an “enough” approach to this as well. No fancy gym memberships for me. No fancy diet. Ep 109 - We Bring The Heavy | In this episode, Stephen Hackett takes over hosting duties for Myke once again. Myke is on a humanitarian mission in western Uzbekistan to bring podcasting to it’s growing Romani population in the hopes it will spur a people’s revolution tentatively dubbed Gypsy Spring. Today, I give the MPAA and all of those concerned about online piracy a bit of advice. You see, they think that people that pirate movies are doing so for free. This is simply not true. Nothing is free. In fact, what the pirates are spending is far more valuable than money. Trying to have a conversation about what to do about it from a mistaken premise is only going to result in things like SOPA and PIPA and other misguided legislation that won’t solve the problem. Ep 101 – Off The Record | This is kind of a special episode. You see, one of the hidden, unadvertised, gems of the 70 Decibels podcast network are the Off The Record episodes Myke records. These are the discussions that happen before or after the show has officially started recording. Because we often record three to four episodes in a row, there is plenty of great off topic discussion that goes on in between. I thought it would be fun, and a great way to kick off our next hundred shows, to give folks a taste of that and make it an official episode. If you enjoy this you really should subscribe to the Off The Record feed. It’s a lot of fun. Ep 100 - A Bunch of Geeks | In this special (and very long) episode, we thought it would be a great idea to get a bunch of my favorite tech geeks together to answer a very simple question: What technology were you most excited about last year and what are you most excited to come this year (with some short version of “why” for both)? Of course, the best laid plans of mice and men tend to be more like herding cats when executed (or something like that). Myke deserves super-human credit for editing all of this together. Please forgive the varying sound quality. It is really difficult to pull this stuff off and make sure everyone is on the same recording page. So, without further delay, strap in and please enjoy. Thank you so much to all of the listeners who have stuck with us thus far. Here are the links along with the respective guests. I tried to capture everything but there are likely some I missed. Ep 99 – How To Boil A Frog | In this episode, Myke and I discuss becoming numb to pain. Like the story of the frog in hot water, this too happens in lots of aspects of our lives. Ep 98 - People and Paper | This episode actually picks up on a conversation that Myke and I were having before the show about people (as in following on Twitter) and paper (as in the kind one writes with). Yes, they seem unconnected but in this case are not. In the case of following, we talk about having a follow limit and the stress Myke has when he goes over it. In this case, the person that pushed him over the limit was my online bud Brad Dowdy of The Pen Addict and Jet Pens. This leads us into a discussion about notebooks and journaling in general. Ep 97 – SSD FTW | In this episode, Myke and I discuss his decision to take the production of the many podcasts he produces from his iMac and move it entirely to his 11inch MacBook Air. He records two podcasts a night, three days a week. Crazy! He discusses his workflow, his thinking about reaching “enough” for what he needs to keep around, and how the SSD in the Air makes all the difference in the world. This also leads me down one of my many digressions. This one being on embracing impermanence – even for things that last “forever”. Ep 95 – Going Home | In this episode, Myke and I discuss what applications are worthy of the prestigious placement on our iPhone home screens. We actually get pretty in-depth and I learned a lot. Ep 94 - iStruggle | In this episode, Myke and I discuss the fact that, when it comes to any of this stuff about simplicity, minimalism, and “enough”, I struggle with it just like anyone else does. I never, ever, want people to perceive me as some kind of expert. I feel I’m quite the opposite actually. The only difference might be is that I am constantly asking questions and seeking answers. I only hope articulating my search for balance helps others with their search as well. Ep 93 - How Bare is Julio's Air? | In this episode, we are joined by Julio Ojeda-Zapata, reporter, tech pundit and author of iPad Means Business. He kicks off the first episode of “How Bare Is Your Air” which, actually, is just a rebranded “Enough for”. The new name was suggested by listener @grapefruitmoon on Twitter. This one turns out to be really interesting because of Julio’s almost exclusive use of cloud based applications. He even went so far as to erase his account on his own MacBook Air and rebuilding it in order to quantify what it is he really needs. Impressive effort indeed. Ep 92 – Occupy Tumblr | In this episode, Myke and I discuss another one of my crazy ideas that I have, despite my reservations when recording this episode, decided to set into motion). I’m dubbing it Occupy Tumblr. Here the deal, I love Tumblr. I use Tumblr. I fear for Tumblr. You see, they have no discernible business model. They have taken mountains of VC investment money. I think they should allow a way for me, and others that use the service, to pay. I think they should take our money instead. So, I’m done waiting for them to come up with a plan for this. I’m going to send them a ten dollar bill, every month, with a note, asking them to consider letting me pay at least this much or more to equal the value I get from the service. I’m inviting others, who I’m calling The 1% – that being 1% of Tumblr’s 36 million blogs, to join me. I personally think three hundred thousand people each sending a ten dollar bill might let them know they don’t need VC money to survive they need us. Ep 89 - Pick A Number | In this episode, Myke and I discuss a previous episode where I proposed pairing my Mac down to a base out-of-the-box install and a limit for five 3rd party applications and utilities. I got a lot of feedback from folks that took this on as a personal challenge for themselves. But, here is my fear – most were focusing on The MacGuffin in this case, the number of apps. Thing is, that is the least interesting and important part of the experiment. The main point is to find how to be your best you through creating constraints. Ep 87 – 5 apps and a Dropbox | In this episode, I discuss my next experiment in enough with Myke. That being, my plan to restore my MacBook Air (11 inch, 64GB) to it’s out of the box state and then limit myself to install no more than five third party apps beyond that. The reason? Ep 67 - Evernote Vs Yojimbo- No Mas | In this episode, Mr. Brett Kelly returns once again to talk about Evernote since it now has a slew of new features making it even more of a staunch competitor to my “everything box” of choice, Yojimbo. Despite my general aversion to Evernote, I can appreciate that it might just be the perfect tool for a lot of folks. That said, I still take issue with it’s data goes in one way but can only come out another strategy. Despite this, it was a heathy discussion and debate once again. Ep 62 - Patronage | In this episode, Myke and I discuss my offer for readers of Minimal Mac to become Patrons. Patronage has long been a way for people to participate in the creation of a work, especially the arts, in return for the value they derived from it and to ensure the artists continued ability to create. We discuss the reasons why I’m specifically using that term versus, say, “membership”. I believe these are very different and specific things. Ep 51 – Money, It’s A Drag. | In this episode iMyke and I discuss my idea that money is nothing more than a construct to facilitate conversations about promises, agreements, and trust. It’s “Information Theater” designed to give you just enough sensationalism, titillation and the false feeling of being informed in the cheapest ways possible. Ep 40 - French Lunch | In this latest installment, I tell Myke about my favorite thing to eat for lunch – French Lunch. It’s pretty easy actually. Just a good fresh crusty baguette, creamy style cheese like Brie (and occasionally also something a bit more firm and nutty like Manchego depending on my mood), and a bunch of good organic red grapes. It’s very simple, requires nothing but a knife, and no prep. Just take it out, plate it and eat it. That said, I find a lesson here which is that the simplicity actually helps to reveal the best of each flavor as long as you maintain the quality. This works for things beyond food. Simplicity
If you want to learn simplicity from a man on the mission to achieve it himself: This is the podcast for you! Other "experts" (in lack of a better term) will tell you what to do without admitting that they don't have a clue. Patrick Rhone on the other hand is honest and shares his ideas with you without arrogance and without claiming to know it or shares crazy experiments with you. Myke is a really talented interviewer that brings out the best in Patrick.
Myke and Patrick also have a great talent for choosing interesting guests.
