This specialized camera app helps contributors easily capture photos of the headstones in any cemetery and upload them to the BillionGraves.com database. The app constantly updates the photo location data while you are moving from grave marker to marker. The result is that each image includes specific location data which shows where each grave is located.
Think about it: If I map my local cemeteries, perhaps someone will do the cemeteries in another part of the world. With that attitude, we will have all of the available cemetery content mapped and available for all to share.
Once the photos are published online, fellow family historians and genealogists can help transcribe the information from the headstones, making it easy to search. That easy search puts unique, previously undocumented headstone records mere mouse-clicks away from anyone looking for their ancestors. By using the iPhone’s location services, we ensure that even when descendants are half a world away, they can see cemetery information, view the actual headstones, and know exactly where those headstones are.
With the 1BGraves app you can further the BillionGraves.com effort:
- Collect headstone photos in bulk, with the location of each marker accurately captured. You can capture hundreds of images and completely map out any cemetery in a matter of minutes to hours.
- Upload those location-rich images to the BillionGraves.com database for all to share. (For security purposes, images may not be widely available for up to 24 hours.)
- Add new cemeteries to the BillionGraves.com registry. We only have a few thousand—there are many more.

Wonderful app
This app is a must for cemetery enthusiasts. Shows all nearby cemeteries and how many images have been uploaded. The staff are quick to respond to emails and concerns.
Interesting take
Refreshing take on graveside genealogy and in providing photographic record to family and future generations. I've been a fan of findagrave.com for some time, however their methods are firmly set in the dark ages of computing. This newer site and app pairing provides users with the raw data we need without all the flash and sparkle we don't want.
I do have concerns over duplicated data and how problems arising from that will be managed, but this has great potential.
It would also be nice to be able to save or email the photo of a grave from a search.
Charges $3.00 to search a name
Deceptive app. You can help build their database of names, but it will cost you 2.99 to search. You can do very little without paying. Very cool concept and could be very useful for genealogists, the hiding the real cost if the app is bait and switch. Bad taste.
