Reseña de álbum

Flamenco? Rock Andaluz? Something new entirely? Who knows? El Barrio still defies classification seven records into his now flourishing career. Though hard to pin down stylistically, there are aspects of his music that are as certain as the dawn. The elusive poetry of his lyrics, the daring mix of traditional and modern elements, and the haunting quality of his voice are consistent and sure. Playas de Invierno ("Winter Beaches") features a fascinating combination of ideas, a delicate weaving together of elements that would otherwise remain strangers. Clapas, chugging distorted guitar, hip-hop inflected drums, lightning-quick guitar runs, and pianos montunos may not normally stand side by side. Figuereo (El Barrio) has an amazing talent not only for out-of-the-box arrangements, but for intelligent, melancholy songcraft. Though his dramatic lyrical themes can occasionally border on self-important, Figuereo's passion and intensity is genuinely engaging more often than not. Some of the compositions come across as more polished than others. The salsa-flavored "Abreme la Puerta" and the carefully crafted and performed "Cartitas de Amor" are album highlights. The more rock-oriented material comes out a little rough, especially when standing beside selections characterized by tight lines and razor-sharp rhythm section figures. Occasional sloppiness aside, Playas de Invierno proves to be an intoxicating listen. Highly recommended for both wild-sided flamenco fans and world-savvy rockers alike. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi

Jose Luis Figuereo, better known as El Barrio (a name he took in tribute to the Santa Maria neighborhood of Cadiz where he was born), is one of a few artists pushing the borders of flamenco both farther and wider. "My music sounds like flamenco, because I am a flamenco man, but people mustn't get mixed up saying the music I make is flamenco." Influenced by the Andalusian rock scene, El Barrio argues that his musical path is closer to artists like Triana, Alameda, Medina Azahara, and Cai than traditional...
