Episode #103 – The Hero Skillset and Why No One Likes A Sell Out | Dan goes back to his roots tearing up Vietnam while Ian gets multi-cultural by voice-overing one of the funniest Italian accents in iTunes podcasting history. This week the guys got an email from an eager and ambitious listener, Skyler: I’m extremely passionate about entrepreneurship, however, I’ve found that it can be hard to find the right opportunities. So while I have the passion, I don’t think I have the necessary skills or experience at this point. One of my goals is to work for you guys at some point, so I just wanted to find out if there’s any one skill that I should try to develop over the next year or two? The guys chewed on the question for a couple days. What are they looking for in employees and contractors? What skill is any entrepreneur looking for in employees and contractors? At the end of all that thinking (and a bit of a Vietnamese food coma) they found 5 skillsets that will be vital to anyone looking to hustle their way to a life of freedom and opportunity. What Are The Top 5 Skillsets To Have In 2012? Writing – Honestly, it’s not hard to be a writer. Just ask anyone who says they are a writer. Developer with Design Sensibility - Having to go between two people to get this done is a total pain. Industrial Designer or Engineer - Those portable bars don’t just get thrown together in a factory somewhere! Internet Marketing - Not in the spammy “Make Money Teaching People To Make Money” way. The Hero Skillset - Your vision has to matter. Listener Questions/Comment: What about helpful locals? When are they being helpful and when are they looking for money? What about pretty girls? – Jonathan Roseland I have a serious hang up that is stopping me from being successful in my business, and I think its one that affects a ton of entrepreneurs. Its the belief that they or their product is not valuable and not worth people spending hard earned money on it. Kind of a belief that making money should be hard for me because it is hard for others. - Jake Mentioned: DCer Jon Myers Web Domination Podcast DriverlessCarHQ Limitless Mindset Podcast The Coming Meltdown in College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Any Time Soon by Mark Cuban Quick Tips, Tricks and Funny Jokes Beats by Dre Premium Pixels by Orman Clark Like the LBP iTunes subscription panel? Once again Ian and Dan are talking marriage in business, discussing partnerships and what matters and what doesn’t in the listener questions. Thankfully Dan doesn’t nag Ian on his greasy oil change habits. Much. With all the questions coming in and advice going out here at LBP, Ian and Dan realized that may of the questions fall into 4 general categories. What Are The Four Pieces of Advice Dan & Ian Dish Out Regularly? If You Have Limited Resources Get A Foothold In The Market You Have 3 Seconds To Tell People What To Do – Not 3 Minutes You Are The Common Denominator In The Drama In Your Life The Internet Is Not A Business – It’s A Tool Through Which You Operate Your Business Listener Questions/Comment: I feel like to really succeed and build or maintain any momentum I need to find a business partner. I want to have someone to help me stay accountable, discuss strategy and take on a fair share of the work load. My problem is finding that person and establishing a clearly laid out business agreement. Episode #101 – The Insider’s Guide To Thinking Outside The Index | Coming off the euphoric high of 100th Episode bliss, Dan and Ian settled in this week to get back to business making money…for others. That’s right, they’re kicking around some angel investment ideas that would end with a qualified start-up getting some runway to make their lifestyle business dream a reality. Is an angel investment accelerator worth the time, resource, and money effort or should they just stop pansying around and make some real investments? In the Meat & Potatoes, Dan takes to the interview seat to chat with Matt Paulson, who has saved the LBP from a fate worse than death – Site Server Error. When Matt isn’t swooping in like a boss to save Dan and Ian, he’s running a web content company that focuses on various consumer and financial websites and newsletters. Matt has managed to build a devoted following that constantly increases with new readers and customers by NOT focusing on his SERP and SEO strategies. Instead, he thinks Outside the Index and uses unorthodox content oriented strategies to continue to build and grow. Some of his best Outside the Index strategies include: YouTube and Google image content Content Writers vs. Scraping Content Content Generating Sites like Bing and Yahoo Finance News Search Engines (Not Your Average SERP) DCers Making Biznass Happen in Berlin Listener Questions/Comment: Each week I recommend a different podcast to my Master’s students. I ran across your podcast a couple of months ago, and have become a loyal listener. I appreciate that fact that you talk about (and see as important) lifestyle ventures. The majority of entrepreneurship-related podcasts, as you know, focus primarily on technology and Web-based startups. As a result, I find your podcast to be refreshingly different. ..I find your podcast to be actually more relevant than most because you talk about ventures that are achievable for the majority of people. – Dr. Bruce Barringer, Spears School of Business (Oklahoma State University) Mentioned: Lifestyle Business Podcast is #1 on Flicker of Genius (Yeah Buddy!) – “This is my favorite. Episode #100 – A Bunch Of Stuff We’ve Screwed Up In The Past 1000 Days | Seems like only yesterday Dan was calling Ian from a noisy cafe in the Philippines to do up another episode of the Lifestyle Business Podcast. Oh wait. That was yesterday! If sports teams have throwback uniforms, consider this special 100th Episode of the Lifestyle Business Podcast a throwback episode, complete with some of our favorite music, quotes, and outtakes from the past 1000 Days of broadcasting this podcast. In this episode, Dan and Ian get a little nostalgic. Remembering the times they’ve had here at LBP, remembering the times that they were away. Most importantly they are digging deep to share the things that worked for them, the things they’ve screwed up, and their hopes for the future of the biznass and LBP. So what are the Bunches of Stuff Dan & Ian Have Screwed Up In The Past 1000 Days? How [do I] go about finding a machine shop that will not only be able to build a prototype, but that will also be willing to work with me on the actual development? – Dave This summer my wife will be quitting a very well paying corporate job (that she hates) and we will be leaving a huge city that we dislike and moving back east to NC where we will be counting on our entrepreneurial pursuits to provide a living for us. It’s crazy and probably more than a little bit irresponsible (just ask my father in law) but it’s time for us to make the change for our family and have faith that ideas, passion, and a whole lot of hustle will be enough to make it happen! Whenever I start freaking out, I always turn to other entrepreneurs, including you guys, to remind me of the fact that a life and career that makes you truly happy is always worth it. – Sean Mentioned: The 1000 Day Rule – What Living The Dream Really Looks Like on Tropical MBA Quick Tips, Tricks and Funny Jokes Wufoo Forms Have fun. Thanks so much – blown away, humbled, and excited as hell barely begin to scrape the surface of how we feel about that! Do You Know If You Are A Shooting Star? Understanding the shooting star mindset will help you fly through the stratosphere and beyond in your business success. People are often their own worst enemies in their trajectories. Why do some people succeed fast and others struggle for decades? Episode #98 – 8 Lesser Recognized Forms Of The Resistance | As Dan and Ian gear up to launch their first Tropical MBA course to the masses, they’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about start-ups, marketing, and business practice in general. These are the things that the guys will be teaching small groups of entrepreneurs and aspiring start-ups this summer from beautiful Puerto Galera in the Philippines. If you have any real interest in being one of those 10 start-ups (and paying 2K for 8 weeks of instruction, guidance, and room / board in the Philippines) I’d like you to fill out the form below within 48 hours. This will sign you up for our exclusive pre-sale, before we launch the Tropical MBA officially to the public next Tuesday. Why are some ridiculous people successful? Why do otherwise brilliant ideas fail? Can you really source an entire business set-up buying gigs on Fiverr? The key, as outlined by Steven Pressfield in The Art of War, is resistance. Resistance is rarely obvious in it’s inception and even harder to identify once you are fully entrenched. That’s why it’s so important to keep an eye out for these 8 Lesser Recognized Forms Of The Resistance: Anything that prevents you from having the best product Being smart Rationalizing your job Doing SEO, tech, specialization that you aren’t specialized in Having people sign NDA’s Going to conferences to learn critical information Getting your friends to partner up Hiring interns, VA’s, and other employees without knowing what’s what? Is There a Better Place to Start a Business? Listener Questions Answered: It would be cool to see how you guys structure things to make the magic happen. What positions did you hire for that you wouldn’t have hired for in retrospect, etc? - Matthew Paulson Mentioned: Chris Ducker’s internship at Tropical Workforce The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Quick Tips, Tricks and Funny Jokes Masterminds – If you want to create one and don’t have the platform, we’ll help! Episode #97 – Entrepreneurial ADD and Free Content For Hustlers | Who knew portable bars could be such a successful pursuit? Dan and Ian did, of course. And that’s where their time has been lately. Freestyling their content a bit this week, they take to their inboxes to answer some listener questions and discuss business strategy. Dishing out the free content for all the hustlers out there, ’cause it ain’t where you’ve been but where you’re about to go. Like a boss. Listener Questions Answered: Listener Bob Malloy Shares LBP With His College Campus On another note, I checked out portablebarcompany.com and you guys told us that you switched it from Shopify to WP, but didn’t say why. Curious – why are you no longer selling the bar on the site, but just accepting phone calls? – Joe Hughes I heard you guys talking about coconut oil. I am a massive fan, and wanted to mention that beyond the uses you said, you can cook with it and use it as a super moisturizer, I actually put it in my hair also. I dunno if guys give a shit about this, but it’s awesome for really dry hair and gives it a super nice shine. – Liz Froment You guys have your hands in a lot of pies, if you have a business up and running and are making some money, should you focus in like a laser on what is bringing you cash flow now or is it a better idea to have revenue streams from a lot of different places if you aren’t completely in love with your business or believe that there are other opportunities worth pursuing at the same time? How do you guys GTD and split up your time and effort between what is making money right now, future investments and projects that you genuinely love? – Matt K I know I’ve been pimpin’ you out for free bonus material, but I have one final question while it’s on my mind (before I finally pony up and join the DC). I’ve failed miserably with outsourced labor…We know it can be a pivotal part of our business, but we’ve just struck out. Do you think there would be a big benefit creating some dialogue with multiple firms in the Philippines, and then going and meeting them in person? We are a development and graphic design shop that can sell our asses off, but our labor is just too damn expensive. We’re having to dish out $1500- $3500 just to get fairly basic wordpress sites done. - A.J. Dunn I have an old affiliate website (3 years) that makes small passive income. What strategies do you recommend for taking it to the next level? Anything from link-building tips, blogging, or creating an awesome ning site (love that idea btw!) would be helpful! Also, I’m going through to change the content so I can offer some great value instead of simply trying to sell stuff. – Sam of WeightCritic.com Mentioned: Joe Hughes - Dynamic Life Portable Bar Company Bob Malloy Quick Tips, Tricks and Funny Jokes Speech To Text Services Justin Hayes – Superhuman Pursuits Dan at lifestyle business podcast . com. Episode #96 – A Proposition : Start-Up August | Things are exciting in the TMBA / LBP world as Ian and Dan work to put together a unique experience for 10 aspiring entrepreneurs. Start-Up August isn’t just some make money quick conference – if they wanted to do that there’d be a lot more hugging and Dan would bring his guitar to strum out some Kum-Ba-Yah ditties. Though Dan IS an awfully good serenader... Instead, this will be an intense three month mastermind process culminating in a two-week all expense paid experience at a resort in the Philippines. You know, that place that Dan and Ian have been gallivanting around for the past month playing in mud-carts and sipping wine on the deck overlooking the ocean. (They’re so classy…) Start-Up August will hit on 4 Key Points To Getting Your Biz Off The Ground: Don’t Unnecessarily Spend Money (Philippines is one of the top baselining spots in the world) Have an Amazing Support Network. Episode #95 – Hiring Interns Right From The Start | Sunsets On The Yacht Are Done...For Now With Ian back stateside and Dan back in Bali, the guys have said goodbye (for now) to their time in the Philippines and are back to biznass. This week, they are chatting about the re-launch of their lifestyle business site, Tropical Work Force. During their time chatting up colleagues and friends in the Philippines, they learned that many entrepreneurs were interested in hiring “interns” of their own to grow their businesses and share their knowledge with. Having been through this process ten times now, Dan & Ian have quite a bit of experience helping people become location independent while working to grow their companies. Some of the experience is great and some…well…let’s just say they learned a lot. Overall, they came up with 5 Tips To A Successful Internship Paid Vs. Unpaid – Put your money where your intern is Get a commitment – Make the gig full-time Give them space – Create opportunities for them to network and meet your peers (Apartment, Join you in your house, Dynamite Circle forums) Ride ‘em hard – These folks aren’t your average employee, challenge them and believe you have something to offer Touch base – No one likes to be micromanaged, but you need to have open communication with your interns Listener Questions: New Stuff Popping Up In Travel All The Time Bob Bradley from Wily Manager – My business partner and I at Wily Manager are both firmly middle aged (mid 40s). We both have wives and children (probably bona fide “REAL responsibility”). We both work hard, but we also work on our own terms, which means I can spend lots of time getting involved in my children’s lives and activities, and even travel and live in alternative places. Currently, I am running my business from Mexico for the next few months where my wife and son are with me. I’m sure there are lots of dreamers out there in the same demographic as me that listen to your podcast. Let them know that spouses and children are no reason NOT to do what you really want to do. Earl from Tail Pet Supply - My question is I have a large e-commerce and was wondering if you had any tips for SEO. It has many pet products and categories.. Should I try to optimize each category or pick some product pages. Manuel from ShowSpace - If I wanted to relocate to South East Asia (which I do, specifically Chiang Mai), where would be a good place to set up my company? How much would it cost and how much “hassle” is it (monthly reports etc.)? Are there trustworthy businesses that can help you with the setup? Dan & Ian join us from the beach at Badladz Resort in Puerto Galera where they have been adventuring around the shooting range, playing with go-carts on the back roads, cutting deals and hustlin’ connections like a boss, and relaxing/karaokeing with friends in various cities across the Philippines. Taking a break from pounding the pavement, this week they’re talking about the most important entrepreneurial skillset one can possess. It isn’t a degree or marketing plan or venture capitalist in your back pocket. It’s all in your head. We’re talking mindset. This will help us to get more listeners and invest more in the podcast! If you know some ways we can make it better, please send us an email. Dan at lifestyle business podcast . com. From Matt: This is a follow up article for the podcast, just to give you some basic tips on sourcing from China, where you should look for help and where you can do things by yourself. The China mindset is a bit different that just about anywhere else on the world, this place is busy, crowded and white hot with growth, development and manufacturing capabilities. Check your “western ego” at the door, humble yourself a bit, learn to listen and read between the lines a little bit, don’t rush through important things and you should do fine. Agents There is not really a rule of thumb for what you should be paying your agent, if they are good they know they are good and will charge you accordingly, either with what you pay them or by some arrangement they have made with the supplier. It really depends on the product, your order quantity and consistency on what you should pay a good agent. This backdoor commission is very difficult to detect unless you know your cost structure backwards, forwards and inside out. Agents in China can be very valuable and can help make sourcing easier, or they can add a layer between you and your suppliers making communication that much more difficult. Look for your agents to provide you with specific services, especially if they are invoicing you directly and you are not paying a supplier directly. Without being on the ground in China, it is almost impossible to independently verify your supplier properly. You should look for an Agent that can provide the following services: Walks you through the sampling process and uses several different suppliers Detailed Agreement structuring – Yes you can build a strong contract in China with a Chinese supplier, you just need to understand or find someone that understands Chinese law Long Term Negotiations – Real negotiations start immediately and never really end with a partner in China, the culture surrounding this is subtle and as long as you have any type of business relationship with a supplier, you should constantly be taking their temperature on things and bringing up information that supports your side of the discussion. This is especially important with regards to payment terms and orders. The following points are all factors in your price, product quality and production time: o Who paid for the tooling? o Who’s handling the shipping and logistics? o How strict are your QC requirements? o Exchange rate? What was it when you signed the contract? What is it when the order ships out? o Does the supplier know you aren’t in China? What will it cost for you to come and personally oversee a problem? Decent QC skills or hiring a 3rd party QC service – it is worth its weight in gold to have [...] | 15 12 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Video Production Hack (Read this before hiring a production company for your online videos) by John from Maverick Media So I have a hack that might help folks looking to get quality video production at a reduced rate. The challenge with video production is two fold… 1) it tends to be kind of expensive and 2) you really need to find someone with real talent to shoot and edit a compelling piece about you and/or your business, particularly if it is going to have any viral equity to it. And you don’t necessarily want it to look like it was shot in your basement. I encourage those looking for compelling video to call up their local broadcast television stations and talk to either the production department or program director. Sometimes the production department will get a percentage for work they bring in themselves…so it is better if you can develop a relationship with these creative folks directly without sales department interference. Try to avoid the sales department if possible…It is likely a sales rep will not get a commission on a production only sale anyway. Do not bother calling the station and pitching them on a content idea in hopes they will air it for free…it will not work and they are approached all the time…start talking money with them and you will make progress. Ideally you want the station that does not necessarily get the highest ratings in the market because 1) you are not after viewer ratings in the local market for your on-line video 2) these “lower tier” stations tend to be more competitive in pricing 3) Local Television stations still tend to attract really talented video producers who probably have experience shooting real news segments and [...] | 15 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #46 – How to Waste 20k on a Web Application | Listen to this episode. One of the most common questions I’m asked is about how to get a web application developed. Many people have great ideas for new web technologies and with Elance just a few clicks away the temptation is huge to throw some money at your idea and get it live to the world. I’m sure this can work for some people, but I’ve screwed it up royally a few times, and I can off the top of my head list 5 friends who have done the same. Episode #42 – [Use at Your Own Risk] Develop a Revenue Stream with the PIVOT Method | Listen to this episode. YO! How are you? I’ve been back in the old USA for over one week now and I’m having tons of thoughts about it (its been over a year!) I hope to write a few blog posts about it. In this episode Ian and I discuss concepts that regular listeners of the show are probably pretty used to hearing from us. We currently have a lot of overhead in our business and we are exploring ways to efficiently deploy our staff to stuff that makes us money. Last month we had a nice little revenue hit from a new product we developed using what we call PIVOT: Position, Iterate, Volley, Outsource, and Time. If that sounds like a big fat put-on, it kind of is, but we had fun using it as a structure to talk about the way we got this done. Also there are lots of random little tidbits in this episode plus an impassioned rant during the quick tip section. Interested to hear your thoughts! I’ll be in NYC all next week doin’ some biznass and meeting old friends, if you are around LET ME KNOW HOMIES! Poolside with Fast WIFI! Episode #39 – 4 Tips for Deciding if a Market is Worth Attacking | Hello from Malaysia! Well everybody I’m almost ready to hop on to a plane to meet up with @anythingian in BALI of all places. We are both long overdue to un-plug from the daily duties of our current lifestyle business, and focus on launching a brand new site that has some really cool implications for our lifestyle and current business. We are looking forward to sharing all of that with you on the podcast, and I’m sure that if we can be more transparent with our stuff on this show the listeners would be a HUGE asset to making sure we do things right. Ahem, here’s a hint: Listen to this episode. In this episode we get a great follow up from @DallasCarter about his 808FIT.NET weight loss website. If you haven’t yet seen Dallas’ incredible story clicksie this link baby and check out how a guy drops 190 and turns into a sexy beast. Issaac Dudek (@isaacdudek) also called in to ask two questions about the mindset of outsourced employees (we focused on the Philippines exclusviely) and the kinds of technology is prevalent in the Philippines. For the meat and potatoes we discuss 4 tips for deciding if a market is worth attacking, these tips are once we recently implemented as we have in the past week chosen two new hot markets to attack (very excited about that!), in terms of execution we’ll be following similar steps we took to create a $6,000 site in 6 months (that site was the last niche we selected). For the quick tips we talk about screen capturing, webex, and how to create great ebook covers in under 10 minutes. Episode #38 – How to Lose Weight and Make Money Online | Yeah buddy welcome back to another episode of the Lifestyle Business Podcast, got a little hung up there on timing we’ve been doing a lot of traveling and have been VERY busy with visitors, investments, and having a little fun too! In this episode Ian and I break one of our social standards– in general we are very AGAINST unsolicited critical feedback (UCF!) but we had a nice discussion talking about Dallas Carter’s great website. None of this applies to Dallas necessarily because there are plenty of business reasons why he might be doing what he’s doing or he could just be busy like the rest of us, but we thought it was fun to discuss a website on air so we broke the rule. We love to receive UCF so if you wanna send us some lovin’ feel free to drop some bombs in the comments. We talk about tons of other stuff in this episode and plow through as many listener questions as we could and still get out under the 30 minute mark. If you want to ask us a question or have us take a peak at your website, don’t be shy we’ll probably get back to you! Good times:) Listen to this episode. Ever since I started my own business podcasts have taken over completely from movies and tv as my primary source of entertainment. Here are my favorites: The Adam Carolla Podcast – Its not heavy material (this is my daily candy entertainment) but I marvel at how well Adam communicates and improvs– he’s been doing radio for over 10 years and he’s the most consistently funny improv guy I’ve ever heard– he constructs some pretty complicated comic maneuvers in real time, like call-backs and alliterative rhymes and stuff… anyway the guy is a mench This Week in Start-Ups – I think @jason ‘s podcast is the currently the best consistently produced business related entertainment on the web (second is now defunct UK version of Kitchen Nightmares by Gordon [...] | 9 8 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #37 – 5 Listener Questions about Location Independence and Business | I’ve been spending so much time responding to emails it finally dawned on me that I could respond with a podcast. WOW. Sometimes I am slow. That’s the new policy. In most cases we’ll answer questions that can benefit the whole community. Not only is this more valuable to everyone listening to the show, but I’m sure it will work out well for the person asking the question as well. I have opinions, but I’m absolutely certain that our collective audience knows way more about these issues than me alone. I just proofed parts of this episode and there are even things in there I could phrase a totally different way or see from a different angle– I’m sure there are some things in there we are just flat WRONG about… that’s gonna happen a lot. I’m cool with being wrong– its way better than not publishing a podcast. Enjoy the show ! We’ve made a lot of broad sweeping generalizations about entire countries in this episode. I’m interested to hear your opinions about some of these questions…. Listen to this episode. Episode #36 – Offices are So Old School | Hey you guys are good for a lot of things but nobody stepped up to tell me getting an office was one big fat stupid idea! JOKE! Kidding…No, I think as entrepreneurs growing a new kind of business, there aren’t any hard and fast rules so we end up testing out a lot of new ideas to see if they stick. One of this year’s big experiements was starting a brick and mortar office here in the Philippines. I learned a TON from doing this but it wasn’t really creating the explosive growth we thought it had the potential to do. We’ve also decided that scaling into more “lifestyle” focused internships is a much more effective way to grow our business in the short term than radically increasing our overhead and support stuff (um… duh?) So its not that the office was outright BAD, its just that everyone made big sacrifices to make it happen, and most of them hit home where it hurt most. We were having less FUN and spending more time on stuff like commutes and pushing ourselves to work outside of our natural rhythms. The key thing here is going to bat. We change our minds about what is working in our business very often, and to me thats a sign that we are pushing in as many ways as possible to look for ways to grow our business and have more fun. Episode #34 – 5 Principles That Work for us That the Internet Marketing Gurus Can’t Sell | Part of the reason Ian and I love Gary Vee so much is that he talks about some basic business fundamentals that don’t get brought up by many online business gurus. The two biggest things that have made us money? Hustle, and getting on the damn phone. <—- watch this awesome Gary Vee cold call video. This episode is about the dirty side of building a lifestyle business– we bring up 5 more “alternative” principles that have helped us to get our business off the ground that you aren’t going to hear from the gurus. I briefly touch on an issue I want to flesh out a bit more in future episodes– “cost free travel.” I hate when my peanut brain tries to drag me in to an office in order to be productive or make some money. I want to be on planes, boats, and buses to exotic locations to meet with awesome people AND be making money while I’m doing it. I had an experience this weekend that makes me believe I’m getting there, more on that soon…. After that, we dedicate a full 7 minutes plus to Ian’s first run at a used car guide. For many entrepreneurs, transport makes up WAY TO MUCH of your yearly budget, and Ian is an absolute ninja at keeping those costs in line. If you are a car owner, we are hoping his guide to budget used car buying can be of some use. Enjoy! Get in touch if you have any questions on comments for the next Episode! Listen to this Episode.
