Description du podcast
Did you have to kill him? Never a question you want asked of you. Especially if the body on the ground was a friend who thought he was being funny, or was a little too rambunctious. Too many of the martial arts resources that we see advertised, focus on teaching you some super-secret technique for removing a person's spleen through their left nostril, and honestly we don't see how that's very useful in normal everyday life. We do see situations where you need to take control of your situation, and that requires responding appropriately to some meat-head who isn't thinking too clearly. That's what we're all about at The Weekend Martial Artist. We help you with a reasonable, safety-conscious response to a common situation, with three escalating levels of control. And we're going to keep our flying-back-kick-pinky-toe-of-death technique to ourselves . . . for now. For your best results always seek a certified martial arts instructor. And remember- karate works! So if you practice these or any other techniques with a partner, be careful. If only because he or she will practice the technique on you, too!

CleanVideoReturn of the Bear hug | So we've already covered a bear hug where a person grabs both you and your arms, you can break that by stepping out and down, while moving your arms up. What do you do if you get grabbed around the waist and your arms aren't inside the grab to help you? There is, of course, the old stand by of "flail and scream" but that is not very likely to do you much good. Instead we suggest you watch this episode of the Weekend Martial Artist. | 21/6/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoAnother Front Choke | We've covered chokes before (Five other times to be exact) but this technique is just plain cool. It's got everything: leverage, push pull action, escalating levels of response, and an awesome 80's dance move. Seriously. | 15/6/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoThe Rear Choke | You know the old trope: the intrepid explorer is in the dark and mysterious crypt when out of the shadows behind him lumbers the mummy, hands outstretched reaching for his neck . . . Well the reason a horror movie cliché is a cliché, has a lot to do with the fact that they are scary as hell! One of the worst places a human can find themselves is being choked from behind. You are surprised, disoriented, in danger, and there is no instinctive way to reach your attacker. This week we show you how to quickly get a handle on the danger, assess your situation, and respond with the right amount of force to deal with either the mean old mummy, or your mean older brother. | 7/6/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoNo Haymakers, Please | One of my first instructors asked our class "What's the best block?" There was much confusion as several contradictory answers were postulated. The instructor, by then chuckling, answered his own question, "The one that works!"The haymaker - basically a wild over-muscled hook punch - is a huge inconvenience when aimed at your head. Getting anything else besides your head in the way of that punch is highly recommended. Avoiding the situation altogether is even better. Live long and prosper! | 31/5/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoNeutralizing the Hammer Lock | Remember the Hammer Lock? It's when someone grabs your arm from behind and tries to get you to touch your opposite shoulder by way of your spine. Annoying, irritating, painful - take your pick. It's the hold most bad guys use in movies from the seventies when they want the hero's face to be seen by the camera. The simplest escape variant is slightly counter-intuitive, but it works, and no one gets hurt. | 24/5/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoThe Bear Hug | Unlike "Goldielocks" we rarely find a bear hug escape that is just right. However we have found 3 techniques to deal with an acquaintance who is being just a little too rough. The first technique is subtle, and better suited to a goof ball friend. The last technique is rough, but a pretty good idea if you are being attacked by a stranger. However if you are being bear hugged by someone you know who just doesn't know their own strength, the middle technique is just right. (and you might be able to live happily ever after.) Skip the porridge, though. | 18/5/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoThe Side Headlock | In my head, it sounds like Monty Python's "Number 17, The Larch", but regardless, when someone gets you in a side headlock, it's usually followed by several uppercuts to the face, and the resulting search for your teeth on the ground. Here are three ways to avoid dentistry bills and the need for poultices. Neat word, that. . . | 11/5/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoTwo Handed Front Choke: Snake Style | Last week we saw how a crane would deal with a wrist grab. This week we look to the snake school to help us with a two handed front choke. As always we show three techniques for dealing with the aggressor. One for someone we like, one for someone we know, and one for someone we need to disable. | 3/5/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoMr. Miyagi was right! | There's a reason the crane is one of the five animals of the Shaolin Temple style of Kung Fu. And it's not because it's the only stance Ralph Macchio could learn. The crane is about balance and timing, retreating and then striking. And it's about thousands of kids drawing up on one foot with their arms outstretched in the 1980s. And adding whatever sound effects they thought appropriate at the time. This week's episode enlists the crane to deal with a troublesome person grabbing your arms or wrists from the front. Your sound effects are entirely up to you. | 25/4/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoGet a Grip | Every Once and a while you meet "that-guy." You know the one. The guy who has to run the furtherest, jump the highest, bench press the greatest weight. The true type A alpha personality. and there's nothing wrong with being competitive, with pushing to one's greatest potential. Except every once and a while "those" people have a tendency to do something incredibly annoying to prove their alpha status. There's the "I have more money than you" alpha status comparison. Theres the I've had more significant others than you" alpha status. And for the truly status deprived, there is the "I have an absurdly firm handshake alpha status."Today we deal with that last one. We're going to show you three escalating techniques for dealing with someone who is trying to crush your hand during a handshake. How to take it. How to stop it, and how to make them wish they had thought better. | 19/4/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoLet go of my hair, man! | Cheech and Chong routines aside, getting your hair pulled from behind is no fun. It's not much fun from the front, either, I guess, but anyway, here's a nice technique to avoid the need for extra Rogaine and hair plugs later in life. | 11/4/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoTwo Handed Lapel Grab | Back in Episode 6 we showed you how to deal with someone grabbing your lapel with one hand, but how do we deal with the classic "get-your-attention-in-a-shady-dive-bar-just-before-we-throw-you-up-against-the wall-and-hit-you" move that is the two handed lapel grab? Well it turns out that the techniques is petty simple, provided that your attacker has elbows (and most do). So while they're thinking up that awesome one liner just before they try to lift you off your feet, you can have them looking at your toes. | 4/4/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoTwo Handed Rear Choke | We've all seen the movie . . . our intrepid hero slowly creeps into the bad guy's lair, only to find out that the mummy, zombie, psycho, or bank manager is actually behind them. Suddenly they attack and inevitably they latch onto our hero's neck with two hands from behind. Well fortunately for hero's everywhere–and unfortunately for filmmakers who need the dramatic tension–this week we are going to show you three variations on a technique that is designed to deal with just this problem. So it won't matter if it's your annoying little brother, your boyfriend's obnoxious buddy, or a zombie mummy psycho bank manager: The next time someone tries to choke you from behind, you'll be ready. | 29/3/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoDouble the Wrist Grab | We already covered a technique for dealing with a person who grabs your wrist, but what happens if that person uses two hands? The little circle is not quite as effective, so this week we show you how to turn the tables and use leverage to pull yourself free. Britney Murphy joins, Matt and Geoff as we show three escalating techniques for dealing with people we know, people we might wish we didn't know, and people we just don't know. | 21/3/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoGetting to the Roots of the Problem (Hair Grabs) | This week we look at 3 escalating techniques for dealing with someone grabbing your hair. From a friend who isn't funny to a fiend who is out to cause real damage the same basic technique can be adapted to respond appropriately and effectively. We also get to see both Geoff and Sarah bring Matt to his knees . . . and that is always fun too. | 14/3/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoA quick turn of the wrist grab | This week we cover a three options for dealing with someone who grabs your wrist. As it turns out a little circle can send your attacker a long way. . . | 7/3/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoWalk Away from the Choke! | A very simple defense against a one-handed choke is to take one step backwards! In this episode, we discover how to do this while defending ourselves against an increasingly aggressive attacker. We also got bombarded by an angry squirrel while we were shooting this technique underneath his favorite tree. It's hard to fight the forces of nature, especially while laughing. Remember, when practicing choke defenses, make sure that your and your practice partner review the subject of “tapping out”. It's very important to practice safely! | 28/2/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoLapel - Grab | At one time or another there's always someone who - for "effect" - grabs you by your shirt, collar or lapel. The effect can be either annoying, intimidating or both. This grab often precedes a barroom-style punch to the face, and is often accompanied by a lot of threats, cursing, and beery breath. This episode of The Weekend Martial Artist explores one option of what to so when someone grabs your lapel. As always, we have three escalating responses starting with manipulating the aggressor's thumb, and ending with the aggressor pinned to the ground while you call (loudly) for help. We're very happy to introduce our actor friend Sarah Rocca to the series. She's a great addition to the Weekend Martial Artist, and still owes me a beer for my birthday from last year. | 23/2/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoNow, Breathe. . . Part 2 | Last week, we learned a simple, relaxing breathing exercise that stretches and strengthens the lungs, arms and spine. What if we added an attacker to the mix? Although it's unlikely that someone will grab you in the middle of breathing the hexagram, it's interesting to note the results. Each movement in this exercise can force an aggressor to release your wrists or arms in a surprisingly effective manner! All you have to do is. . . breathe! | 15/2/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoNow, breathe. . . Part 1 | In this episode we begin with "breathing the hexagram" a series of six simple breathing motions that are also effective self-defense movements. | 7/2/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoWhen Push Comes to Shove | Deflecting an aggressor is usually much safer than a head-on confrontation. This episode demonstrates a simple, effective technique to defend yourself from someone pushing or shoving you, from a measured gentle response up to a firm not-so-gentle response. | 1/2/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoTapping, Chokes and Swinging for the Fences. | This week we cover the importance of being able to "Tap Out" and 3 escalating techniques for dealing with a front choke. | 24/1/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
CleanVideoWelcome to the Weekend Martial Artist / Wrist Grabs | Episode One demonstrates a very simple yet very effective way to escape a wrist grab. We start with a gentle movement that can be adapted to defend yourself in three escalating circumstances. | 21/1/09 | Gratuit | Afficher sur iTunes
