Arena Synth Pop

A synth pop band making a live album, and a double disc set at that? D.A. Pennebaker's accompanying documentary followed the band on their conquering American tour and depicted audiences singing along devoutly to the dark, simple lyrics: the band was addressing the adolescent nihilists inside us all. Lust, masochism and religious guilt were delivered in hip electro sounds and catchy pop melodies. The previously faceless musicians were transforming into a rebel cult act, a process helped enormously by photographer Anton Corbijn's atmospheric reimagining of the band: captured on monochrome film and in their rough-trade biker gear, Depeche Mode had a edgy cinematic glamour - they are the synthesiser wonks as rock stars. This unexpectedly cohesive and propulsive live set at the L.A. Rose Bowl - the band’s 101st concert - functioned as a best-of to the band’s early career, just before they broke into the mainstream with 'Violator' and ventured into murkier territory with frontman Dave Gahan's rehab soul-searching - it’s the moment they soared.

101 Stars

This has got to be one of my all time favourite albums. From the moment the (90,000+)crowd hear the first note played, right through to the mass sing-a-long finale, this is a captivating listen. Playing songs mainly from the 'Music for the masses' album, the concert moves seemlessly from one track to the next. The recordings are mixed so well, at times you think you're listening to a studio album and Dave Gahan's vocals don't fail to impress. This album is a must for any DM fan, buy it! I only wish that I could of been there to witness such a spectacle.

A Must-Own

I'm actually a rock/metal fan but this live album blows away all others. I can't believe it's over 20 years old - it still sounds fresh and the setlist, mostly from the Music for The Masses and Black Celebration era, stands the test of time. It was the first Depeche Mode album I bought and made me a total convert to them. It's amazing how much soul this band can capture in electronic music and, i know it sounds like a cliche, but this album makes you feel like you were at the show. You can feel the energy in the crowd. I wish iTunes would make the amazing 101 documentary available too!!

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s.
