iTunes Review

The 1970s proved to be an era for hard rock bands to explore the further reaches of their ambitions. Canada’s Rush were among the groups who locked into a successful new formula that eschewed the conventions of the hit single for instrumental diversions and lyrical adventures that helped them stand out within the burgeoning scene. 2112 is Rush’s fourth album and the first to consistently capture their emerging vision. All accomplished musicians, the trio emphasized dynamics and thrilling trills to accentuate their epic musical vision. Arena rock was only beginning to find its place and Rush’s blend of progressive rock’s slow-building moods and their own anthemic powerchords proved to be an enlightening mixture. The title track is a seven-part, 20 minute epic where drummer Neil Peart’s Ayn Rand inspired lyrics are passionately expressed by bassist Geddy Lee’s shrieking delivery. The shorter selections that made up side two of the original album – “A Passage to Bangkok,” in particular – pointed up the band’s strengths as succinct writers as well. Rush became the exemplary power trio, every member finding their distinctive niche without sacrificing the collective power of the group sound.

The first Masterpiece

The song 2112 is an incredible work of prog rock perfection. It has moments of utter quietness and moments of explosive ferocity. It is extremely well structed as well containing an overture for the piece before the story begins; and a cool story it is. Influence by the writings of Ayn Rand, the story tells of a futuristic society that has banned literature and music and the individual that tries to change things after the discovery of a guitar. The CD even comes with notes preceeding the lyrics explaining the story in more detail. The rest of the songs are good to excellent; the excellent being 'A Passage To Bangkok' and 'Something For Nothing'. However this album deserves 5 stars on the basis of the title track.

Rush - 2112

What can i say, i certain masterpiece. You'd expect to find that a track that exceeds 20 minutes would be very boring, well in most cases yes, but 2112 is just pure art and a show off of what Rush can really do. Probably my favourite song of all would be 2112 (not just within this album) and the rest of the album is usual classic Rush, superb. If your a Progressive Rock fan, you should defenatly consider getting this. (This review was by a 14 year old)

One of the best albums ever!

2112 is a flawless track, every section, from the hard rocking Temples of Syrinx to the gentle yet jagged Presentation. The only prog that is in the same territory as this band is Pink Floyd.
