iTunes Review

With his ninth solo album, The Jam and The Style Council's former frontman makes good on the album's title with 22 songs that span the gamut of musical influences Paul Weller has absorbed in over three decades of keeping the British mod flame burning. In its entirety, 22 Dreams ambitiously attempts to mirror the changing seasons with a flowing and moving metamorphosis of textures, moods, styles, and genres. Weller eschews his "trad-rock" pigeonhole by taking on jazz, Krautrock, spoken word, electronica, blues, pop, and modern psychedelia while managing to maintain a consistency throughout (via help from Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Cradock providing a foundation of classic guitar tones). "Light Nights" introduces the album with an intimate acoustic presence that blends gypsy fiddles, hypnotic drones, and sublime vocal harmonies. Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer from Oasis cameo on the swirling and kaleidoscopic powerhouse "Echoes Around The Sun," and Graham Coxon from Blur injects his gentleman's indie rock scuzz on the strolling "Black River".

I'm Frightened

What a brave Cd this is...it will frighten & upset die hard Jam fans but the mix of musical styles on this one album is truely astonishing. There are a couple of standard Welleresque rock numbers (22 Dreams & Push It Along), folk style songs a la Wildwood era, but the thing that sets this album apart is the beautiful (and sometimes quirky) orchestration which reminds me of Style Council's 'Confessions' album. A staggering, eclectic mix from one of the country's true musical legends...keep on knockin' 'em out Paul (50 not out).

oooh aaaah paul wellaahhhh

Listen. Get on this. This is a great album. Easily his best. It's a great mix of pastoral Nick Drake folk, jazzy interludes as well as some piano ballads and rockers that will keep those 'die hard jam fans' happy! It's eclectic yes. It's fun yes! And it really is a very accomplished album. The playing is great. If there's one thing to let it down - the lyrics are a bit corny sometimes - buy hey - don't worry about it. Download the album. Lie in a darkened room. Put it on your headphones and really enjoy!!

sometimes less is more

I've seen PW so many times live and love the energy. The 22 Dreams is a brave display of his love for loads of different music. But I'd skip half of this because of the whimsy and froth = leaves me cold. There is beauty here and a double album priced for as one can't go wrong. But this is not his 'white album', certainly not his best. But what can I say I still love his songs:- All I Wanna Do, Have You Made up Your Mind, Empty Ring, Invisible (at the piano lovely), Cold Moments (the best track !!) like style council café bleu days. Call me narrow minded but that's what I want from a modfather

As the leader of the Jam, Paul Weller fronted the most popular British band of the punk era, influencing legions of English rockers ranging from his mod revival contemporaries to the Smiths in the '80s and Oasis in the '90s. During the final days of the Jam, he developed a fascination with Motown and soul, which led him to form the sophisti-pop group the Style Council in 1983. As the Style Council's career progressed, Weller's interest in soul developed into an infatuation with jazz-pop and house...
