Album Review

Emma Bunton's post-Spice Girls solo debut is the most surprising of the lot, as it moves farther afield from the bubblegummy dance-pop of her former band than Melanie C.'s Northern Star or Geri Halliwell's Schizophonic. The single "What Took You So Long?" opens the album on a gliding cushion of acoustic guitars, dreamy keyboards, and laid-back mid-tempo beats, a mix that underpins nearly the entire album. Even the assertive title track (the hook of which is a cleverly bleeped f-word in the chorus, a deliberate move away from the saccharine Baby Spice image) has the relaxed groove and organic feel of a classic early disco single instead of the canned electronic beats of Hi-NRG dance music. Bunton didn't have the best voice in the Spice Girls (that would be Melanie C., with a special nod to Geri Halliwell for getting by on loudmouthed brassiness), but unlike Victoria Beckham and Mel B, she can genuinely sing, albeit sometimes with a thin reediness that's not quite enough for a song like the gospel-inflected "Sunshine on a Rainy Day." (And the cover of Edie Brickell's "What I Am" only reinforces what a lame song it is.) On the other hand, "Been There, Done That" and the slinky "We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight" sound like the singles that should have been from the Spice Girls' disappointing last album, unapologetically catchy and well-constructed pop songs in a style that's been a part of pop music since the days of Lesley Gore or the Supremes. A Girl Like Me isn't an album for the ages, but it's better than "not bad."

From Girl Power to Flower Power

Full of great rhythms and soft flowing tracks. This is an ideal, summer heat, sun bathing in the back garden, "relax - it'll be fine" album. Some tracks push the smaltz a bit too far but otherwise it truely is a really well done, original sounding retro album. By far the best of all the former Spice Girls efforts. Well done Em. Now, stop all this dancing lark and get into the studio again.

Moving away from that Baby Image

It's certainly suprising that 'A Girl Like Me' didnt sell more than the 125,000 it did, then again the single choices can be the sole blame, gems such as 'A World Without You' and 'High On Love' only show the strength of the album tracks that are present here. However, both covers, 'Sunshine on a Rainy Day' and 'What I Am' are lack lustre and offer nothing new from the original. The single 'Take My Breath Away' is missing something, yet as a listener you struggle to see what, maybes not quite single material but it would have been a strong album track. The album contains the original mix 'We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight' and shows a different side to the single mix, a more relaxed Spanish sound which the song suits. This album is for a music listener who enjoys something easy to listen to and light hearted, not quite five stars but worth a buy.

Spice Girl Emma Bunton wasn't the first to venture off from her dance-pop band the Spice Girls for a solo career. Melanie C. was most triumphant with her 1999 debut A Northern Star while Melanie B. and ex-Spice Geri Halliwell earned mild reviews. But like her fellow musical mates, Baby Spice aimed for solo success during the new millennium. However, it wouldn't have been nearly as possible if...
