iTunes Review

Rolling on stately rhythms of brooding grandeur, Coldplay made good on its initial promise with an outstanding sophomore album. A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002) kept faith with the band’s audience by further mining the lyric depths and sonic chasms heard on their debut Parachutes. Echoing the stark atmospherics of Pink Floyd and the emotionally unguarded vocals of Brian Wilson in his prime, Coldplay creates music of austere power throughout this album. Singer Chris Martin’s luminous falsetto achieves an aching poignancy on tracks like “Politik” and “Amsterdam,” lending elusive colors to his elliptical lyrics. There’s a majestic power to the band’s stripped-down ensemble playing, whether they’re unreeling a loping groove on “In My Place,” weaving a swirling melody on “Clocks” or painting a bleak aural landscape on the title track. “God Put A Smile On Your Face” may be the album’s high point – Martin’s spiritual intimations mesh with the shimmering flow of the track flawlessly — amid the incisive playing and quiet intensity throughout.

Almost a 5!

Coldplay are a band who really know what they're doing, taking indie music to its very limits, leaving other bands in awe. The songs all have a huge amount of meaning, and none battles on for too long. 'Politik' is a brilliant opener with its eco message, 'Clocks' bears resemblance to the world of classical minimalism and the use of piano is wonderful. However, perhaps the greatest success lies in the slower songs. 'The Scientist' is a shockingly beautiful account of death with poignant lyrics, a simple and understated melody and something choking about it which gives you a chill with each listening. 'Amsterdam' is a beautiful piano ballad ending, exploding into a final passionate conclusion, leaving a sense of awe and wonder. 'Daylight' is a radiohead-ish sort of song with its chordal clashes and lovely final minute. Although the first half is technically perfect, the latter half with 'Warning Sign' and 'A Whisper' are not quite as perfect, but neither is less than excellent. If I hadn't heard X&Y, I'd have thought this was POSSIBLY the greatest indie album, but I think the later album contends for that title more, because that, somehow impossibly, builds on this.

The Best Album of all time

This is my all time favourite album and in my opinion is quite possibly the best album ever made. I have never heard anything as close to perfection as this, with no bad tracks whatsoever. It juust gets better with every listen and is indescribably good. Full marks Chris Martin et al.

Awesome

I don't know why I have taken so long to do this. I first heard this when I was waiting to invade Iraq in 2003. That's not much of a recommedation I know but when things were totally shite I played this album and it got my head in gear. 'Clocks' especially did it for me. I remember playing it over the lodspeakers of the vehicle when we were storming a building in Basra. Chris Martin would probably have a fit but so what?

Biography

Formed: 1998 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
