iTunes Review

ABBA may be the most enduring four-letter word in pop music. It’s ironic that the Swedish quartet kicked off its triumphant streak of international hits with a song named for a famous defeat: “Waterloo”. As it turned out, ABBA conquered nearly every corner of the planet by the end of the ‘70s, thanks to their near-flawless amalgam of high-gloss harmonies, indelible melodic hooks and universally-appealing lyrics. Gold is a solidly-packed overview of the band’s lifespan, moving from exuberant youth (“S.O.S.”, “Mamma Mia”) through a confident maturity (“Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”) towards a bittersweet conclusion (“The Winner Takes It All”). From the giddiness of “Take a Chance on Me” to the nostalgia of “Fernando” and the desperation of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”, the group connected with the most primal of passions. Three decades later, the vocal blend of Frida and Agnetha retains its mesmerizing shimmer, while Bjorn and Benny’s songwriting continues to grab ears around the globe. The group remains synonymous with inspired pop craftsmanship, canny image-making and an elusive sort of innocence – qualities captured in the tracks of this collection.

Customer Reviews

the greatest pop band of all time?

OK, contestable in the light of luminaries like the Beatles, but in truth the Beatles headed off in different directions, whereas in the main, Abba stuck to the tried and tested......and made some of the most memorable pop songs in history. Download each and every track and realise that unless you have been deaf for the past 30 years or so, that you know all the words and whilst some songs may sound slightly tacky, they are all 100% genius. In fact, if you don't own all of these songs you're in denial. Do it and feel so much better when you're singing along with your mates...

The Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection!

If "Mamma Mia" is your first encounter with Abba, then download this and hear the originals. Probably the ultimate in greatest hits collections, this is simply hit after his - you probably know all the words already, even if you didn't realise it!

A Must Have For The "ABBAholics"

I Previously Wrote A Detailed Review For Every Song And Then Itunes Store Decided To Time Out, So I'll Keep It Short. This Is Possibly The Greatest "Best Of" Compilation You'll Find. I Never Thought ABBA Could Be So Good Until I Heard This. Stand Out Tracks For Me Are The Winner Takes It All, Fernando And One Of Us. Ive Been Obsessed With All Of The Tracks But Those 3 Are My Current Favourites. The Only Criticism I Have Is The Name Of The Game And Thank You For The Music, Poor Tracks, Gold Would Have Been Perfect If It Werent For Those Two Tracks I'd Give This 6 Stars If I Could But Oh Well PURCHASE THIS NOW

The most commercially successful pop group of the 1970s, the origins of the Swedish superstars ABBA dated back to 1966, when keyboardist and vocalist Benny Andersson, a onetime member of the popular beat outfit the Hep Stars, first teamed with guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Ulvaeus, the leader of the folk-rock unit the Hootenanny Singers. The two performers began composing songs together and handling session and production work for Polar Music/Union Songs, a publishing company owned by Stig Anderson,...
