Nottingham’s Illuminatus tag themselves as a ‘post-metal’ band. As such, you’ll be expecting something a little different from the norm, and that’s exactly what you get. Heavy emotion, a dark outlook and more power than the national grid are certainly nothing new, but it’s the way they’re put together that matters. Like Jamie Oliver conjuring haute cuisine from a Pot Noodle and a tin of beans, Illuminatus bring the threads of Opeth, Mogwai and Candlemass together to create a sound that’s at once classic, grandiose and stirring. You could pick your own reference points, just make sure they’re equally diverse. Post-metal? It’s as good a tag as any, and a lot more relevant than anything prefixed by ‘nu’.
