iTunes Review

England’s Peggy Sue moved from its jangly, neo-folk beginnings to a darker hue of gothic Americana for 2010’s Fossils and Other Phantoms. On Acrobats, things take a sinister turn and the sound goes electric. Amped guitars replace acoustic ones, and the accordion and glockenspiel of Fossils become scarce. Produced by longtime PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, Acrobats does conjure the tone and timbre of Harvey and her gloomy, cinematic atmospherics. But while Harvey has always had a rock soul, the ladies of Peggy Sue (plus drummer Olly Joyce) mine the deep roots of traditional folk. Vocalists and founders Katy Young and Rosa Slade still paint bleak scenes of lust, love, and betrayal with their mournful howls, and the whole of Acrobats comes across as a mature collection that's had a great deal of thought given to the smallest details. Consider the opening track—“Cut My Teeth”—which crosses boundaries from folk to rock and back again, with the greatest of care given to each genre's very essence.

Enjoyed this

I bought Fossils & Other Phantoms after seeing them support Joan as Policewoman and this 'tricky second album' doesn't appear to have been so tricky afterall. Good harmonies and lyrically strong.

I'm sure there's more to come.
