Another uncomfortable wonder

This new disc builds on the superb "Marry Me" and takes us into Annie Clarks' difficult world. The listener has bought several albums in one. There is the superficial pop song collection that catches the ear on first play. Then, when you get into the words - you hear another layer of Clarks' honest and uncompromising world. Soon you start to notice things like some of the quirky but delightful backgrounds and dissonances and the gentle plateaus of minimalism bravely inserted into the pop song structure. Its hard to make music that reads on so many levels and which entertains as well as demands but ultimately such depth in needed if the artist is going to enjoy longevity. I still listen to "Marry Me" regularly and I now am pleased to have this in my ipod. I also admire the use of a wider range of acoustic and orchestral instruments- reminds me of the world building that Scott Walker gets up to in his work. For me "The Sequel" stands out for its musical creativity - but its up to you to find your own favourites.

Beautiful album

Absolutely haunting. The party is my particular favourite.

Actor

What I really love about this album is the contrast between vocalist Annie Clark's sometimes meltingly soft voice and the injections of raucous reverb'ing guitar, keyboards and drums, the balance from track to track between the two always variying to keep things interesting. Add poignant, expressive lyrics that paint vivid word-pictures and you have a consistantly strong and engaging album. I love this!

However, St. Vincent's beguiling sounds helped Actor rise to number 90 on the Billboard Top...
