Album Review

Annihilator's brand of technical, thinking man's thrash metal garnered many fans with this fine debut, arguably the best release of the band's career. A brief acoustic guitar piece called "Crystal Ann" introduces the excellent title track: a psychological murder thriller supposedly based on a disturbed young girl's true story. Leader Jeff Waters takes himself a little too seriously at times (see the Edgar Allan Poe-influenced "Ligeia" and his ridiculously erudite commentary on each song's lyrics), but he is equally prone to refreshing flashes of humor on "Word Salad" and "Schizos Are Never Alone." The spectacularly named Randy Rampage proves himself to be a versatile vocalist on "Wicked Mystic" and "Burns Like a Buzzsaw Blade" (seriously). The careening closer "Human Insecticide" is magnificent for its sheer speed.

Amazing album!

Alice In Hell is one of the best thrash albums ever to be released! If you love thrash and you havent heard this album then where have you been?! Annihilator rule! End of story.

Genius is close to madness. (Not the Band).

Young Jeff W. does sound slightly obsessed in places (several places to be fair) but, if you have only experienced more recent Annihilator offerings, this will be a pleasant shock. Crystal Ann is an incredibly well played and composed piece of classic guitar to open with, it's inspired and surprising in equal measure. The album is littered with breathtking guitar solo's from Randy Rampage (please let that be his real name) e.g. Human Insecticide, which may cause a fairly serious spinal injury, but it's worth it. And who would not want an album with songs entitled Word Salad and Burns Like A Buzzsaw Blade? Having originally bought this album on vinyl (a type of plastic) I still have no idea what it's about. But that adds to the Mystic. Genius. Let the madness begin.

Great musicianship, shame about the lyrics and singer

Anyone who appreciates the sheer majesty of a piddly guitar solo should listen to this album, it has some of the greatest playing I've ever heard. The tunes are great too but it's all a bit let down by the cringeworthy lyrics and their hysterical delivery by the absurdly-named Randy Rampage (I think Jeff was the guitar mastermind and Randy the hired vocalist). Shame really that the vocals seem to have been tagged on as an afterthought, Jeff should have left it as an instrumental album.
Still it's well worth a listen unless you are congenitally embarrassed by silly metal lyrics. I try to enjoy them as one would a pantomime villain!

Canadian thrashers Annihilator are the lifework of guitarist Jeff Waters, who founded the band in his native Vancouver in 1984 — just as the speed metal revolution was getting underway further to the south in the San Francisco Bay Area. Due in large part to this geographical isolation, Annihilator as a band phased in and out of existence over the next few years, with only Waters as a constant factor, but...
