iTunes Review

Johnny Cash’s long, legendary career comes to a close with this final collection produced by Rick Rubin and featuring numerous songs that confront the final showdown. Cash’s career spanned many years when his music was either at odds with the times or was produced in ways that diminished his considerable strengths. But Rubin took fewer chances, focusing on “The Man In Black” and his world-worn voice. By stripping Cash’s music down to its essentials, often little more than an acoustic guitar and voice, Rubin helps Cash make songs like the banjo-stomping “Ain’t No Grave”, Sheryl Crow’s “Redemption Day”, and timeless classics such as ”Satisfied Mind” and “Cool Water” sound like the Final Word. A slight Western sweetening on “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” adds a burst of color and the bittersweet tone of the Hawaiian melody “Aloha Oe” makes for a fond farewell. Could there be a dry eye in the house after this listen?

The one and only...

Worth it to hear his cover of Sheryl Crow's Redemption Day alone. Throughout the American series with Rick Rubin he has proved to be the master at putting his unique take on what are already strong tracks. This is album is no exception.

Good to have you back Johnny.

Time to let him rest

Always very good at making other peoples songs his own and this is still the case here. Not as good as A5 and i hope this really is his final album,i might be a fan but it really is time to say goodbye.

goodbye Johnny

A bookend to the American recording series, which (hopefully) puts a very firm full stop to Rick Rubin's work with the late and very great JC.

If you are reading this then you will buy the album anyway - It is as essential as the other 5, but even more poignant and wracked.

If you are new to JCs stuff with Rick, then personally I would go for the Unearthed set. It covers all the bases and contains loads of fantastic collaborations.

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
