Album Review

And Then There Were Three, more than either of its immediate predecessors, feels like the beginning of the second phase of Genesis — in large part because the lineup had indeed dwindled down to Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins, a situation alluded to in the title. But it wasn't just a whittling of the lineup; the group's aesthetic was also shifting, moving away from the fantastical, literary landscapes that marked both the early Genesis LPs and the two transitional post-Gabriel outings, as the bandmembers turned their lyrical references to contemporary concerns and slowly worked pop into the mix, as heard on the closing "Follow You Follow Me," the band's first genuine pop hit. Its calm, insistent melody, layered with harmonies, is a perfect soft rock hook, although there's a glassy, almost eerie quality to the production that is also heard throughout the rest of the record. These chilly surfaces are an indication that Genesis don't quite want to abandon prog at this point, but the increasing emphasis on melody and tight song structures points the way toward the group's '80s work.

So what do the experts know....?

The critics rate this as one of the worst Genesis albums ever. The so-called "real" Genesis fans talk it down (presumably because it features neither Gabriel or Hackett), yet it is probably one of the most played albums on radio, particularly on the Northern European mainland. Leaving aside the pop tune Follow You Follow Me - which did the band a great service in introducing so many people to Genesis music - this is a varied compilation of tunes ranging from the light hearted fantasy of Scenes from a Nights Dream to the imposing and slightly dark Burning Rope, which comes complete with thunderous drums and reverberating bass. Youngsters find the tales within the songs fascinating, Phil Collins' voice is as good as at any time in his career and although the music contains little by way of innovation, the production and general feel of the album are stasfying to most of us who enjoy rock. One of my favourite albums when it comes to donning the headphones, with a glass of wine and lose yourself in the music.

Its not Gabriel, but I keep coming back !

Long after Peter Gabriel left, the three remaining members of this group finally shrugged off his shadow and found their own style. I don't know what it is about this album but it has a haunting quality that reminds me of the time it was released, plus it stands up to the test of time very well. I'm not saying it's better than their earlier recordings but I still like it. Probably more than when it was new.

A true classic

And then there were three was the first Genesis album I heard back in 1978. Although it didn't please many of the fans who thought the band died when Peter Gabriel quit, I actually prefer Phil Collins vocals to Gabriels on all of their songs. Steve Hackett's lead guitar is missing from this album. Mike Rutherford had previously played rhythm guitar and stepped up to the challenge of learning to play lead. If you follow Steve Hackett's solo career you will hear the missing ingredient from the pre-1978 Genesis albums. That said, it was a change in direction that made Genesis more popular with many music lovers not just the prog folks. I recently purchased the remastered version of this on cd. The accompanying DVD has a unique and very interesting documantary made by the BBC following Genesis on their 1978 tour of Europe

Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups,...
