iTunes Review

A master confectioner creating layer-cakes of sound, Enya has rarely deviated from the recipe she perfected some two decades ago. 2008’s And Winter Came… is built upon her time-tested combination of shimmering stacked vocals, well-sculpted melodies and genteel Victorian ambiance. Enya’s stately voice and gleaming keyboard colors bring a chilly luster to “Dreams Are More Precious”, “Last Time by Moonlight”, “Stars and Midnight Blue”, and similar pop arias. The Christmas-themed tunes range from originals like the Victor Herbert-esque “One Toy Soldier” and the austere “Journey of the Angels” to a well-burnished treatment of “Silent Night” sung in Irish. The bouncy, Beatles-flavored “My! My! Time Flies” adds some needed vigor and snap but if the album has a failing, it’s the lack of a strong upbeat track along the lines of “Orinoco Flow” or “Caribbean Blue.” Still there’s an undeniable charm to whatever Enya touches, regardless of whether the music reaches the exalted heights of her very best work.

What can one say about Enya that has not been said before, graceful, haunting, timeless. If you buy one album this year that can take you away to a place where you can dream and be happy, this is it. Well done Enya another fine album beautifully crafted.

Stunning

Only Enya could make me drift off into pure happiness, get cold shivers and want to cry all in the space of one CD. She is truly a master of her craft. She has one of the most beautiful, and unusual, voices in music today, and it is exquistely show-cased here. The songs on this album are very wide-ranging, to capture all aspects of winter in general and Christmas in particular. There are a few straight carols - her version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is nearly divine - and a few other religious-themed songs like "Journey of the Angels". The album also features some songs with more general winter theme and sound, such as "Dreams Are More Precious", "Last Time By Moonlight" or "Trains And Winter Rains". Other songs have a Christmas theme behind them, like "The Spirit of Christmas Past" and "Stars And Midnight Blue". "White Is In The Winter Night" and "One Toy Solider" almost sound like children's Christmas songs, but Enya's delivery of them is still beautiful - "One Toy Soldier" was one of the songs that brought me near to tears - and they fit perfectly with the rest of the material. My only complaint is that I wish she had brought this out nearer Christmas time, because it's putting me into the holiday mood and it's still only early November! But I suppose that is just a sign of Enya's ability to capture emotion in sound. I would add, however, that if you are new to Enya, because this album is themed, it probably isn't the best way to get into her sound in general. I would recommend starting with "The Celts" and coming back to this if you enjoy it - as I'm sure you will.

Genre: New Age

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences. Enya is from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, which she left in 1980 to join the Irish band Clannad, the group that already featured her older brothers and sisters. She stayed with Clannad for two years, then left, hooking up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, with whom...
