Awesome Debut Album
Stumbled accross this band at their debut gig in nice and sleazy in Glasgow this is total find and must have for any rock fan. If you like strong emotive lyrics backed up by rocking guitars then take a chance. Anger Fulled Emotion and Dakota are fast and like Oasis but with a bit of the phonics thrown in for good measure. But the album is not all about the harder side of rock take a listen to the flame and be transported into another plane. Vocals are excellent sound a bit like kelly jones but stronger. If your going to download on track to find out what the kitsch are about then go for Im On my Way, I cant recommend this album highly enough.
An Understated Epic!!!
As far as debut albums go this is as good as you will hear. Well written, good talent on show and well produced.
The album kicks off with a swagger reminiscent of Lock, Stock....it works well and sets out the confidence the band seem to be playing with. The album then moves on to the very catchy pop rock tune Dakota that many will class as a favourite. Cold Beer then gives a low produced feel Ocean Colour Scene, again a good tune.
For me it is here that the Album really starts to comes into it's own with Not Afraid giving a wink to how the rest of the album pans out. It introduces the (for me) epic feel to the album. And given it is tilting to 8 minutes long that’s hardly a surprise. Bringing some of the best of 90's Britpop to the fore, (the Oasis side of Britpop), but not afraid to go further back to some of the best of 70's rock.
(the interlude is very pretty, and I think it again marks the full turning point in the album - but I would grudge paying 79p for a 43 second blast :o) ).
Anyway back to the positive, as I said the album turns a positive corner with Not Afraid and it has fully progressed with the Flame. It sounds very beautiful, excellent guitar solo's and the vocals sound like they are very well produced, especially the harmonies (I must add that I am not a music critic or a musician so I could be off point). It evokes Dave Gilmour at points.
War/No Reason - Easily for me the best track on the album. It has a fantastic build up, reminding me at points of RATM, and the subject matter hits it also. The vocals again sound great on this, whatever work carried out on this section really, really works. Then for me at 2.42 it really kicks in well, good for running to, with a natural pace and a definite nod to the jangly sound of the late 80's.
Everything I Want doesn’t lose pace at all, big epic sounds that at the same time sounds very understated. It reminds me very much of Mazzy Star, clearly with a man replacing Sandoval. For those not familiar with Mazzy Star it also evokes the quality of a Mark Knolper.
Now Your Free is a nice tune that talks of nostalgia, which is holds some thought given the many influences the band clearly draw on. This one in itself reminds me of Kid Rock or someone of a similar style.
Finally the album comes to a crashing and epic climax with the excellent I’m On My Way, tapping into that understated, but big sound that I love so much from Mazzy Star. However it would sit equally nicely in a iTunes mix with a Stone Roses track or something from Gomez.
This is a very solid debut, but when you listen to tracks 6, 7, 8 and 10 you can’t help but be blown away. If these tracks aren’t on their greatest hits album then I know nothing.....although that is probably true also. It is an album that has shades of everything from the Jangle of Stone Roses to the Sweeping sounds of Hendrix and Procul Harem, it even touches on modern greats such as Oasis, and (ahem) Kid Rock whilst not being shy to touch on the Floyd and Straits. With a name like The Kitsch I am sure that they revel in their roots and while they have done them done them proud, they have also done this sounding fresh and not (as the bands name suggests) rip off.
wish I could create music like this
It's 11:35 on a Friday eveinf and it looks like my backs against the wall but then with no warning the kitsch burst up everywhere on the wall and I yell and I scream ad if it's a dream but the world I'm in is depressingly real until the licks and the lies of 5 talented guys drive roughshaw over my thoughts and I'm deep and I'm caught but the music is nit mine to own only mine to belong to and I'm home and im happy the madness they have blessed me with I can managed to survive with.
