Album Review

It's nearly impossible to initiate a discussion about singer/songwriter Ben Taylor, son of Carly Simon and James Taylor, without first mentioning that he sounds a whole lot like his legendary father. The cool, calm, and effortless voice that narrates the ten songs on Another Run Around the Sun could break into "Fire and Rain" at any moment and nobody would notice, as the young Taylor has managed to craft an album that could have come out in the mid-'70s with nary a change in production, but he projects a less cocky version of his more famous parent. Impeccably produced by actor/musician Kevin Bacon, Taylor's third full-length recording is sure-footed, impossibly warm, and engaging enough to deserve an attentive audience. Standout cuts like "Some Day Soon," "One Man Day," and "Think a Man Would Know" may break little new ground for the genre, but they're as solid as anything doing time on adult contemporary radio.

Effortlessly melodic

Ben Taylor daringly runs close to his father's territory with this second album, but nobody would really confuse the two of them. Even though they both use acoustic guitars and softly sung melodies. Ben's take on the family style is fresh and different. His voice is tantalisingly familiar, yet quite new. The melodies are haunting and surprising, and the modern still includes that lovely acoustic guitar sparkle. Some of the songs are quite experimental sounding, and go off at tangents. Most have a surprising twist, or a bit you look forward to; a little musical treat wrapped inside. The best news is that every song is up to scratch. Ben Taylor is definitely one to watch.

Beautiful

This album has to be one my most played on iTunes & there's a reason for that. It's truly beautiful. It's true that the vocal similarities to his father [James Taylor] are glaringly obvious but Bens' talent is so much greater than that. I have been following his career since his he first put his music down on tape (sadly unreleased) but this is his most accomplished work to date. Lyrically clever this album is a slow burner & will surely get under your skin. Stand out tracks are, Nothing I Can Do, Digest, You Must've Fallen & I just Love the tradition folky intro to Think A Man Would Know. Also Check Out Island from 'Famous Among The Barns' his previous album recorded as The Ben Taylor Band. Keep the music coming Ben (& Check out Sally Taylor too)

effortlessly thrilling

what an album. An acoustic sound so mellow and down-beat that somehow uplifts you inside. i Have been playing acoustic guitar for 6 years now and if i ever get the chance to do a song with you will be the single greatest experience of my life. Keep up the good work. if you get the chance e-mail at tom-eaton-16@hotmail.co.uk tom
