Album Review

Symphonic metal with prominent pianos and a glamorous female singer — that would be an unwieldy name for a genre but after enough years of bands that clearly wore their copies of early Gathering CDs into the ground, still appropriate. Thus the sophomore effort by Delain, which has all the flair one would expect for a band that might be the new Evanescence or the new Birthday Massacre or its own self. Or something else again, but the elements on April Rain won't surprise many — Charlotte Wessels' sweet, soaring vocals; the chunky but polished rampage of the band; the half-AOR, half-snarled thrash; plus, of course, orchestrations galore, as "Stay Forever" delivers from the start. It's an album to enjoy for its ability for the obvious — for newcomers it might be less so, of course, so it's a chance to enjoy the big pomp and Euro-metal guitars in their own right. Everything does seem like it should be soundtracking the latest Underworld movie, no bad thing necessarily.

Amazing!

People keep trying to compare Evanescence to gothic and symphonic bands...its wrong. They may sound similar but they're not the same. Someone tried comparing Sirenia to Evanescence recently too. Just no. This band has a much more epic, lift you out of your seat kind of sound. Delain's singer Charlotte has one of those heavenly voices that many of the female vocalists in this genre do, and that with the keyboards, bass and drums (mainly) drive the epic sound they produce. When they reach these epic choruses you truly feel lifted out your seat, and can end up losing yourself, stopping whatever you are doing to fully appreciate the sound. If you must compare this band to others, then Within Temptation or Nightwish would be good ones. Particularly Within temptation, as the keyboardist Martijn used to be in it. An awesome band that are very accessible, imo.

Recent discovery

I recently discovered this band after loving other similar bands such as WT and Nightwish. And Delain don't disappoint either!! Have some quality songs with the best being : April Rain Virtue and Vice Start Swimming I'll Reach You Its also an extra bonus having Marco Hietala from Nightwish singing some vocals! Also check out their other album - Lucidity

One of the best albums I own.

Quite simply, I would rate this album so highly that if I could keep any one album of my collection, this would probably be the strongest candidate.

You can easily tell the connection with WT, the same style but it's not the same.

I would reccommend it to anyone, especially if you've heard of and enjoyed the "big guns" Within Temptation, Evanescence, Nightwish, and then Epica, Lunatica or After Forever - Delain is one of the "big guns" anyway. If you like this, I also reccommend you go check out Visions of Atlantis and Lacrimosa, who deserve much more attention and are up there with this lot.

I'd like to add that I would not for a second attempt to compare Delain to most of these - they are very unique, although if I had to compare, I would say it has WT's rhythm lines, accessibility and hit-penning skills of Nightwish, vocals not so far from Epica - but it really is it's own thing.

I don't give 5* lightly, but this fully deserves every single star and more.
I think that every song on this album is potentially a single, but the most accessible ones that you should start with are April Rain, Stay Forever, Start Swimming and The Other Side.

Enjoy one of the greatest femme metal albums of all time.
