iTunes Review
By 1971 Jethro Tull had established their serpentine instrumental passages and high and mighty lyrical projections as a trademark blend of acoustic and electric guitars, organ and flute, while they borrowed and dismantled disparate elements of jazz, blues, English folk and rock until it could only be Jethro Tull. With their fourth album, Aqualung, the group wrote the anthems necessary to cement their status on FM radio and send them into the arenas where Martin Barre’s electric guitar riffs could be simulated by air guitarists worldwide while Ian Anderson’s one-legged flute work presented more of a conceptual challenge. The title track, “Cross-Eyed Mary,” “Hymn 43” and “Locomotive Breath” form the album’s resilient core. “Mother Goose,” “Wond’ring Aloud” and the meandering “My God” reflect their pastoral side. Anderson moralizes throughout, unable to reconcile government and organized religion with the individual’s need for spiritual regeneration. The angry screed of “Wind Up” would become even more pronounced on the group’s next effort, the single-song complete album Thick as a Brick. This expanded version contains a few extras, including an interview with Ian Anderson.

Musical genius
I`ve only ever heard this version so can`t comment on the previous reviewers distaste for the new remaster but either way this is a work of both lyrical and musical genius. One of the triumphs of the 70`s rock scene and a must for any serious audiophile`s collection, I cannot praise it enough.
Very Cross Eyed Therese- what have they done!
Perhaps I am naive, but I thought "re-releases” or “re-mastered” meant better sound? Not here, this is a travesty of an album, the tracks have lost their raucous edge, and everything has been toned down. Any guts to the album has been lost in a release which harmonizes everything, makes all tracks a joyful, "We Are The Eagles" singalong..outrageous! Avoid this version, get the original
actually a 5 star album...but
But i think they let a guitarist do the mixes when remastering - Ok.... a bit of a geeky review this - so read on if you dare. the remastering isnt' really working for me. one of the main problems is that they've mixed the guitar solos very upfront - i've only just listened to aqualung and wind up, and the solo's on both these are just not "sitting in the mix". As a guitarist i've always loved martin Barres guitar sound...but here it's just too exposed. they've also worked too hard on the seperation of some of the guitar parts, so you can hear each line, rather than the way i think they were meant to be, which is each part blended so you tend to hear one organic riff. So i'd suggest caution to anyone who knows the vinyl version really well - However. it's still a work of genius - am just away to buy my other favourites, songs from the wood and minstrel in the gallery.
