Excellent debut album from Bastila
Saw this band a couple years a go at a gig in London and thought they had real promise. Having listened to this album I'm happy to say they are well on the road to fulfilling their potential. This album shows the versatility of the band with a wide range of songs - from the gypsy-punk blast that is "The Slacker", to the haunting "Ghosts" in the middle (excuse the pun!). Tracks like "Takin' Over" and "Jackie Boy"are short and catchy whilst stand out track "Heart Dont Beat" builds and builds over the repetative drum beat until reaching a climax. Bring Me the Head shows Bastila are also capable of a bigger sound when they decide to go down that route. The Intelligent guitar work which is sadly lacking in a lot of today's indie music is apparent in most tracks and the use of the trumpet is also very good throughout and helps the band set themselves apart from a lot of other bands out there. If there is one criticism it is that their lyrics can be a bit cliched (for example Nothing to Tell) but there are enough examples of more intelligent lyrics to believe that they can certainly develop in this department. it is difficult to see what route Bastila will take next as they have shown they can create very different sounds but I'm looking forward to finding out!
Best album for a long time :-)
I can't get enough of it, loving all the tracks and the band live are awesome. check them out!
Impressive Debut
So many debut albums these days repeat the same song for the duration so it's a great joy to find one that has a diverse blend of tracks that takes the listener on a journey. There is more to be had in the more complex songs such as Bring Me The Head, Ghosts and Heart(don't)Beat but it is the mixture with the entertaining songs that sets it apart as an album.
