Album Review

It's too bad that this best-of compilation of sneering and snotty British punk from the legendary but painfully overlooked Penetration is an import, because American punk revivalists could learn a few things from the mercurial English quartet. Their 1978 debut, Moving Targets gets the most airtime here, and rightfully so. Band staples like "Don't Dictate," "Stone Heroes," "Free Money" and "Life's a Gamble" show a group that fully embraced the anti-authoritarian attack of bands like the Clash and the Adverts without becoming a slave to its limited sonic and compositional foundation. Vocalist Pauline Murray could snarl with the best of them, but tracks like "She Is the Slave" and "Life's a Gamble" from 1979's critically slaughtered (unfairly) bid to bridge the two worlds of punk and new wave, Coming Up for Air, shows a singer who could command an audience's attention no matter what genre she felt obliged to interpret.

passionate songwriting dosen't sound dated

Don't dictate and come into the open, were the equivalent of going the whole way with your bloke.to me. Total love and dedication followed, music had so many layers, the words, the music ,the hooks, the gig, the recording, the hours of teenage angst comparing and discussing the better recording etc.. Come into the open was my exam for potential boyfriends, if they could listen to the song and then work out the guitar and play it successfully then I was a sure thing. Don't dictate solved a lot of difficulties of fear of expressingmy self.the rest of album is good.

With Pauline Murray's impassioned vocals (sounding a bit like X-Ray Spex's Poly Styrene) leading the way, this was a blazing piece of anti-authoritarian rant: loud, snotty, and proud. Sadly, it was to be the one song they remained best noted for (assuming there are people who still remember Penetration). The...
