iTunes Review

Since Radiohead evolved into one of the few bands of the 1990s and 2000s to use the album as a cohesive artistic statement — each album defining a particular style and approach — a “Greatest Hits” collection may seem to be a slightly perverted way to capture the group. They did, however, issue strong singles. The minor-chord dirge “Creep” from their 1993 debut album Pablo Honey established their pop potential early and with the heart-stopping “Fake Plastic Trees” and the sublime “High and Dry” expanding their range for their second album, 1995’s The Bends, Radiohead were poised to become one of “alternative” rock’s most radio-friendly groups. However, their artistic ambitions demanded they chase more adventurous tones and the challenging puzzles from 1997’s OK Computer (“Paranoid Android”, “Karma Police”) and the further abstract compositions from 2000’s Kid A (Idioteque”) and 2003’s Hail to the Thief (“2+2=5”) showcase a band constantly evolving with technology. This overview throws out chronology for an idiosyncratic pacing of its own. The limited edition version includes 13 extra cuts with the b-side “Talk Show Host” (that also appeared on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack) being the one relative obscurity.

Customer Reviews

Not Worth A Penny.

Radiohead have been the most original, inventive and probably the best band of the past twenty years. One of the reasons why their music works so well is because, as well as the fact that they just write brilliant songs, each album is thought over extremely thoroughly before being released, right down to the tracklisting, and not because they want to make money, because they want an album to sound as good as it possibly can be. This is where EMI have gone completely against Radiohead's wishes. Firstly, they have released this 'Best Of' without their consent (surely, the artist must have some rights), and secondly, they haven't thought once about how their music might sound, when all six of their albums released with EMI are jumbled into one. I can hardly imagine that listening to the unsettling electro of 'Idioteque' straight after the sing-a-long soft rock of 'Fake Plastic Trees' will leave much of an impression. Also, putting 'Just' as the first track of the album, rather than say, 'Everything In Its Right Place' or 'Planet Telex' (two songs which were written by Radiohead especially to open the two albums they come from) is definitely a money-making move, seeing as it contains Radiohead's most well-known riff. Nevertheless, if you want to get into Radiohead and you don't know where to begin, this might be a good place to start, however you won't be anywhere near as impressed by the music as you would be if you listened to each of their separate albums. This is evidence that ever since Radiohead left EMI, the company has been trying to squeeze every single penny out of people by releasing their work all over again. A Disgrace To The Music Business.

A Radiohead best of..?

It's a shame to hear that EMI have released this against the wishes of the band themselves, however for new fans I think this is an excellent taster for what they are all about and perhaps will increase their fan base as a result. It has all the classics here that most people will know and its nice to see that they've included some less unknown tracks here too. Especially a personal favourite "true love waits" which is a great way to round off the album. It's a pity that the rest of the albums track order didn't have more thought put into it though. Radiohead always progresses and takes a different direction with each album they release, so its a shame they couldn't mirror that with this Best of by placing the songs more thoughtfully. If you're a fan you won't buy this as no doubt you will own all the albums and would prefer to hear the songs placed where they were intended, but if your new to Radiohead and want to get an idea of what this band is about this is the album for you.

An Excellent Collection - Outstanding Audio!

Radiohead have done many things, been many places, said many words. This anthology takes on the tricky job of trying to capture a representative sample of that, and pulls it off with aplomb. A word about the audio quality: the iTunes Plus encoding these tracks are sold is absolutely outstanding. For roughly the same price as other iTunes albums, you get 256kbs AAC tracks with NO DRM - meaning you can play these tracks on any modern music device. These tracks sound amazing and give a new richness and texture to the Radiohead recordings that I don't think I picked up on before. There so much in this music, you'll want to hear it all in 'high definition' too.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Oxford, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Radiohead were one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's three-guitar attack, which relied on texture — borrowing as much from My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd as R.E.M. and Pixies — instead of virtuosity....
