Album Review

This album is somewhat of a transitional recording for Runrig as it bridges their four-minute anthem-laden '80s approach to songwriting with the lengthier, more textured treatment found to a greater degree on their subsequent '90s releases. With indeterminate influences ranging from U2 to Big Country Runrig has, nevertheless, created a style uniquely their own. Always advancing the Scottish Gaelic language, they include their customary two such numbers with "Abhainn an T-Sluaigh" and "An Cuibhle Mor." One of their most well-known songs "Flower of the West" concludes this album in typical grandiose Runrig fashion.

An Cuibhle Mor - The Big Wheel

This is a great album. As well as being a collection of wonderful songs, it fits together well as an album, with each song leading nicely on to the next. It contains a blend of Runrig's different musical styles. The best song on the album, in my opinion, is the title song, An Cuibhle Mor. This is in Gaelic, but is at the more Rocky end of Runrig's musical spectrum. As well as being a great, catchy song, it has lyrics which actually mean something (if you understand the Gaelic) rather than the usual meaningless lyrics on most modern rock music from other bands. That said, there is not a single bad song on the album, so it is an allround excellent showcase of all Runrig's strengths.

Outstanding

The launch of this album was in time for the bands' INCREDIBLE concert at Balloch, by Loch Lomond, on June 21st 1991. As a Scottish soldier based in London at the time, I left my barracks at 4am to get the first train available to Glasgow then on to Balloch, making it a VERY long day by the time I got home - and when you listen to this album, you'll agree - it was well worth it! Fantastic band, and yet another outstanding album.

OK - The Big Wheel

From the title you would expect a lot and from the start you get it and until you get back. If you ever burn this CD and have a family then put "I'll keep coming home" as the final song and you will. It is the one of the most inspirational songs ever produced. After a stressful day - WOW - it makes you realise what life is all about and here is the real surpirse - Runrig knew this at the time!
