iTunes Review

A minimalist quartet with expansive productions, a modernist dance band, circa 1980, with undanceable rhythms and its heart in ‘60s pop, and whose songs — with unflagging intelligence — question everyone and distrust signs of intellect, XTC serve as a study in contrast. Its leader Andy Partridge is the virtual definition of the standoffish, British observer, preferring socio-political metaphor over matters of the heart  — and always singing on the defensive, as if he’s the kid at the bottom of the pile-up being beaten senseless. Black Sea is the group’s fourth album and continues along the sonic improvements — drums and guitars charge at you — and compositional maturity that took root with their previous Drums and Wires. “Respectable Street,” “Generals and Majors” and “Towers of London” are the closest this group of misanthropes is likely to come to accessible, mainstream pop. “Living Through Another Cuba” and “Love at First Sight” virtually define the group’s obstinate approach, spelling out their internal paranoia with jagged rhythms, carefully placed and seductively catchy backing vocals, and a parade of sounds that suggest the circus is in town. Plenty of fun to go around — if you prefer brain teasers.

A good old slice of pop!

When you talk about the great pop albums of the eighties this is up with the very best of them. Gone is the harder, slightly punky sound of 'Drums & Wires' replaced by this collection of bright, upbeat almost faultless tunes. You might remember the albums singles releases - 'Sgt. Rock', 'Generals & Majors', 'Towers Of London', 'Respectable St.' - they are all here along with other classics such as 'No Language In Our Lungs' and 'Paper & Iron.' This is a perfect album to introduce you the music of XTC.

sounds of the deep...

originally tiltled..."work under pressure"... (hence the diving suits on the cover) andy et al were really feeling the toll of 5 years of straight touring,so,here we are with an album penned on napkins from hotels as they toured, with partsy ordering,"only what we can play" no frills...or overdubs, though obviously there were some! opening with the chiming tones of "respectable street" and closing with "no lanuage in our lungs" the rest of the tracks seem to become superfluous..but never unrelated. as a whole the album is superb, a controlled attack of pop/rock diamonds shimmering in paghams giant production sound. epic drums driven by the mighty arms and legs of terry chambers pound the whole thing along.sneaky guitar lines insinuate themselves inside your mind courtesy of the supple fingers of messsrs partridge and gregory, and the bass, well the bass speaks for itself...grooving for england on "paper and iron" mr moulding props the whole thing up with some truly magestic bass to underpin the songs of partsy... this album was the sound of my youth,it still echoes round my head all these years later, and i still love the band even though colin does'nt seem to wanna go on. its a great album, i dont need to say any more....but you gotta listen!

XTC ecstacy!

A real trip back for those who remember the early 80's! Many tracks still sound modern and put Franz Ferdinand to shame! Listen to "The Somnabulist" and marvel that this is an old track, it sounds so now. You will be singing along in no time....

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding. While popular success has eluded them in both Britain...
