Album Review

On the surface, Blood from a Stone, Hanne Hukkelberg's third album, may be her most direct work so far, slotting more neatly and readily into a recognizable genre type — call it dark, shoegazey, post-punk-derived art rock — than either of her previous albums, and making prominent and comparatively conventional use of electric guitars, without abandoning her distinctive found-object approach to orchestration. Hukkelberg's music has always required repeated and attentive listening for the nuances of its elliptical melodies and intimate sound-worlds to seep through. She's always been an artist who works in shades of gray, and Blood is close to a gunmetal smear, drawing explicit inspiration from the likes of Sonic Youth, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and PJ Harvey, Hukkelberg seems less interested in those artists' visceral urgency than their sonic grittiness. Blood gestures toward post-punk's primal edginess, particularly in its brutalist percussion tactics (freezers and stoves, clogs and rocks, no traditional drum kits), although her remarkable voice is put to notably less expressive use this time around. Still, things start out strong, with the lush, gauzy "Midnight Sun Dream," the swaggering title track, and the driving "Bandy Riddles," which boasts the album's most sprightly melody. From there on it's heavy going, although the songs remain respectable and even potent on a tonal and textural level, with some undeniable moments of beauty and strangeness. ~ K. Ross Hoffman, Rovi

Wakes your ears up

I've always been a big fan of Hukkleberg and her earlier "Rykestrasse 68" is one of my top play albums. Hukkelberg never leaves us feeling that we've heard it all before and it could be better if only... No - she delivers fresh ideas without the feeling of her trying to outdo anybody else in unusualness or wackiness (which sometimes passes for creativity). This album is characterised by a reduced dependence on keyboard and sample sounds and more guitar and drum textures. (just when you thought little more could be done with a rock combo). She understates the texture of the instruments allowing no "lead" lines or hook riffs and lets her great voice float above. Songs like "Crack" grow with layer upon layer of two or three note guitar patterns until they build into orchestra like textures. "Bygd Til By" is just a lusciously produced gem (and a little more like earlier work) but it allows her voice to crawl into your ear and nestle warmly in your head. (sorry if the imagery is a bit OTT there). Makes you smile openly when you are listening in the street - to the bafflement of passers by (I suppose I could just tell them to get the album). Simple pleasure delivered intelligenlty and with great skill. Five stars and an invitation to Hanne to come to tea any day. MJKM

Biography

Born: April, 1979 in Kongsberg, Norway

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

A Norwegian singer and songwriter with links to that country's jazz, electronic, and experimental music scenes, Hanne Hukkelberg makes intimate, idiosyncratic music that is not easily categorized, combining a wide stylistic range of folk, pop, and jazz with a predilection for unusual sounds, often culled from everyday objects, and a stunning, versatile voice that has garnered comparisons to Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Björk, among others. Born in Kongsberg in 1979, Hukkelberg began singing and...
