iTunes Review

U2’s 1980 debut album announced a band with a distinctive sonic tone and major ambitions. Guitarist Dave “The Edge” Evans had his basic chiming attack in place, the rhythm section of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. was capable of tense, propulsive motion, and singer Paul “Bono” Hewson knew how to scale the castle walls, mountainside, and whatever romantic terrain he needed to in order to reach the soulful aspirations of youth. And producer Steve Lillywhite ensured the band’s vision got to tape. “I Will Follow” was an immediate anthem, but the tight frisson of “An Cat Dubh”, the driving attack that alternates with moments of pastoral reflection in “Out of Control”, and the carefully placed dramatic guitar notes that chase “Stories for Boys“ make this a more than impressive debut.

Dynamite

the edge is quite startlingly good on An Cat Dubh. A brilliant debut album that was already playing great live. Anyone remember the Marquee and 'a Day without me'. Nostalgic this and we all may have moved on. But there's great energy here. Seeing them live then and again in Paris was a memorable treat - because it's cool to have music you grow up with. For anyone coming to this freshly there might be too much roughness, immaturity, but that's what always gave them appeal. They hadn't decided who they were. So this outshines the later works Achtung Baby, Pop, Zooropa and How to Dismantle the Bomb because it has an innocence - youth finding their feet. Explosive stuff

This album is why I am...

I was passed a promo copy of 'I Will Follow' when I was 14, then smuggled myself into the Marquee around the same time. This band got me into music (from which I now make a living), and I now judge all that comes along against this band at this time. Not one band has come close...well, maybe the Arctic Monkey's in terms in energy. 'Boy' still sounds full of teenage angst coupled with some masterful production. It's an electric album in the true emotional sense of the word that takes you on and old fashioned journey through a set of songs that wholeheartedly stand the test of time. Personal favourites are 'Twiliight' and 'Another Time Another Place'. Goosebump moment is the first minute of 'Out of Control' - it still makes me feel that I'm 6ft from the band at the tiny Marquee Club with a few hundred other souls back in 1980.

Boy

Of all the three albums that have been re-released by U2, Boy is by far the best. It sounds wonderfully fresh and full of energy and is certainly a favourite of mine. The central themes of innocence and coming of age coupled with the sound of the band stand the test of time and easily stands up today. The extras in this deluxe edition are also excellent, providing us with rare recordings from U2's early stages.

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. They were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional,...
