Album Review

Highly ambitious, challenging, idiosyncratic, and confounding, Boys for Pele expands on the more experimental and progressive tendencies of Under the Pink. Amos frequently discards traditional song structures and employs wide-ranging, eclectic instrumentation in her music, while her lyrics seem to grow even more obscure, giving the album a very impressionistic feel. While there are certainly worthwhile moments, her experiments don't always work; some of the songs fail to stick, and it takes a few plays before many start to sink in. Ultimately, Boys for Pele is polarizing: Some Amos fans will only admire her more for taking the risks she does, while others may find to their disappointment that the intimacy and personal connection that helped Amos build her fan base are too difficult to detect.

A great album, probably her best

A great, multi-textured and rich album, almost totally destroyed in this edition by the "bonus" remix of Professional Widow, slapped carelessly in the very middle of the album. The remix is fine in certain contexts, but sticks out like a sore thumb here. Of course, you can always remove that track from the playlist...

Needs time

At first I did not get this album (like other people who have reviewed it here) but gradually, one song at a time I grew to really love it. I'm not a crazed fan who loves all tori does, but this quiet, intense album has lots to offer. But you need to give it time. Read the lyrics and slip into its space...love and loss and desire and pain. Quirky, weird and warm.

Not Great

Only a couple of listenable tracks on this poor record. 'Caught A lite Sneeze' and 'Mohammed My Friend'. Rest is gibberish.

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s while re-establishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album Little...
