Album Review

With Rain Dances, Camel began exploring shorter, more concise songs, but it wasn't until its follow-up, Breathless, that they truly made a stab at writing pop songs. Although they didn't completely abandon improvisational prog rock — there are several fine, jazzy interludes — most of the record is comprised of shorter songs designed for radio play. While the group didn't quite achieve that goal, Breathless is nevertheless a more accessible record than Camel's other albums, which tend to focus on instrumentals. Here, they try to be a straightforward prog rock band, and while the results are occasionally a little muddled, it is on the whole surprisingly successful.

A Pleasing Album

I am a big fan of Camel because of their unique writing styles and their advanced musical ability. I thought Breathless was a very entertaining album, you can really get a feel of their vast knowledge of musical ability. They are experimenting with shoter, more concise songs in this album which is very successful as the songs are very catchy and pleasing. The longer songs have taken on their more safe, progressive rock style of writing songs which comes out with a nice sound. Overall, the album is a cheerful, jolly album with an excellent show of instrumentals, suprizingly good vocal demonstration and an allround pleasureful listen.

Makes Me Smlie

As the main review says, this was camel stepping into "song" mode, and they made a smashing job of it. Richard Sinclair's voice is as rich as Golden Syrup, making "Breathless" a delicious opener, and his bass is melodic throughout the album. Down on the prayer takes a funny lyric that would have gone well with the Wurzels and puts it over the chrds from Pachelbel's Canon. Andy Latimer's Les Paul sings gloriously on Summer Lightning and The Sleeper. A few funky beats crop in, along with a nod to disco strings on Summer Lightning, but Andy Ward was always the funkiest of the Prog drummers so with a bassist of Richard Sinclair's class it works fine. A good album which bridges the gap between the older stuff and their masterpiece "I Can See Your House From Here".

Breathless

Excellent and inspirational. Timeless tracks from Camel culminating in the epic 'Ice'. This track is worth the whole Album in it's own right. I can feel elated, melancholic, buzzed all in one go. 5 Stars.
