Album Review
The cover of this first actual Jethro Tull album since 1979's Stormwatch depicts Ian Anderson as an elf-warrior, with wings and a sword, and a ship with a stylized Norse dragon's head. Anyone expecting a fantasy or heavy metal album was due for a disappointment, however, for most of the songs that have any identifiable references are about topical politics more than anything else. Martin Barre's electric guitars share the spotlight for the first time with Peter-John Vettesse's synthesizers, and Anderson is still playing lilting tunes on his flute and acoustic guitar. Tull's electric sound, this time in the hands of ex-Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith, is smoother, less heavy, and more thinly textured than their past work, and there are times — most especially on "Flying Colours" — where they could almost pass for the latter-day Moody Blues, something the band never would have permitted in earlier days (though if the Moodies could rock this hard and fast, it would be an achievement — for them!). "Broadsword" and "Pussy Willow" are easily the two best songs here, and not coincidentally the two that owe the most to traditional folk music in their structure. Most of the rest is little better than tuneless drivel.
Customer Reviews
what???
tuneless drivel???? sorry guv but this album is oneof the finest uk products of its time,. emotive, powerful (without the need for excess) I play for a prominent thrash band but Tull are one of my influenes, the song construction, musical ability and sheer inventiveness of this cd should not be underestimated. Tull still stand as inventive arrangement geniuses and if Ian anderson reads this, I tip my hat to you for bringin the sounds of rural england onto the rock format. The use of the flute and portative organ meld with the synth and distorted guitar sound perfectly, lie back turn off the lights and be transported dont look for criticism enjoy an experience.
Masterpiece
Whatever was in Ian Anderson's coffee during the writing of this album they need to box it up ! The quality of this album is demonstrated from the tracks that never made it on the original 'cut' - those tracks are here ( there are still others that didn't make it on THIS one ! ) and now they are added it makes this the best 'Tull' album ever - How 'Jack a Lynn' and 'Overhang' never made it on the original I'll never know - buy the whole album !
The soundtrack to my youth
Funny that, Tull were the soundtrack to my Mother's youth too!! Still longevity aside, this is a remarkable album, with it Tull proved that they not only fed their already massive folk/rock following but were able to (without changing their recipe) connect with a younger audience who were more steeped in hard rock and metal music...they are a national treasure..cherish and love this album. As for the Album review...'tuneless drivel'..don't listen to this, the opposite applies...BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
