Album Review

Bubble & Scrape is the last Sebadoh record to feature Eric Gaffney, and accordingly, his contributions are not so much songs as tantrums; blistering rants like "Telecosmic Alchemy" and "Elixir Is Zog" offer much in the way of dissonant noise but little in the way of substance. Still, the album has much to recommend it — not only does Jason Loewenstein emerge here as an increasingly adept songwriter, even approaching the quiet beauty of Barlow's acoustic songs with tunes like "Happily Divided,", but Lou Barlow truly hits his stride: both "Soul and Fire" and "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)" are sterling additions to one of the most impressive catalogs of love songs on the planet, while "Cliche" stings with bitter intensity. Bubble and Scrape is a rich, diverse, and terrific record, even with its occasional dull spots. [Domino's 2008 reissue adds fifteen bonus tracks including songs released on singles, unreleased takes on songs from the album (most notably Barlow's acoustic demo of "Soul and Fire") and rememberances from all three band members in the liner notes.] ~ Jason Ankeny & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Another Sebadoh Masterpiece!

I would to start by completely disagreeing with the i-tunes reviews claim that Eric Gaffney's songs 'lack substance'. This is an extremly dismissive and frankly ignorant comment. While Gaffney's songwriting is abrasive and perhaps not for everyone, it is also brilliant and unique. Lyrically, he is fascinating and musically equally so. This is a brilliant album from head to toe, and a great starting place for someone new to Sebadoh (particularly if they are interested in the 'classic' line-up)... It features all three songwriters (Barlow, Loewenstein and Gaffney) at their best, while still maintaining all the diversity and quirkiness that makes Sebadoh great. And like their other records, there is a lot to digest here, making it all the more pleasing of an experience. At once a psychadelic, aggressive and moving album... Way to go, Sebadoh!

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Amherst, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As much a collective of musicians as a band, Sebadoh was the quintessential lo-fi band of the '90s. Formed by singer/songwriter Lou Barlow while he was the bassist for Dinosaur Jr. in the late '80s, Sebadoh's music was a virtual catalog of '80s alternative rock and '90s indie rock, featuring everything from jangle pop to noise rock experimentalism. Upon being kicked out of Dinosaur in 1989, Barlow turned his attention toward Sebadoh, a home-recording project that he and drummer/songwriter Eric Gaffney...
