iTunes Review
Building on the success of their previous release The Seldom Scene Kid, Elbow return with a soulful, groove-oriented art rock album. The storyline in Build a Rocket Boys! takes a sincere yet unsentimental look at aging, the importance of family and friends, and the value and challenges of following your dreams. The album features inventive, intricate arrangements built on lushly textured layers of guitars, echoing pianos, organ, and gorgeous vocals throughout. They even use choirs to good effect. The drum and bass provide a moody trip-hop feel and an overall warm and inviting atmosphere. While poetic, the lyrics are clear, linear, and sweetly nostalgic, and each song is like a mini opera without the bombast. The centerpiece of the album is the mesmerizing “Lippy Kids”, which examines the joy and angst of the teen years from the perspective of an older man who rhetorically urges the kids to seize the day — “Do they know these days are golden?/Build a rocket, boys!” It may not be a causal listen, but Build a Rocket Boys! isn’t difficult either, and it rewards close attention paid to both the elegant musicianship and the story it tells.

Grounds for Rejoice!
My word... talk about nailing down the knack of putting together a great album. Undeterred by the weight of expectation upon them following the resounding success of 'The Seldom Seen Kid', the lads from Bury have cobbled together another beautiful collection of songs that you just know are going to become the soundtrack to your Spring, Summer and beyond, as each song burrows beneath your skin and deep into your soul. The opening track, 'The Birds', is just brilliant, easing you in nice and gently, and yet with such a simple structure... the melody & harmonies are just perfect. Other highlights include 'The Night Will Always Win', 'Open Arms' and 'With Love', which you just know is going to be huge crowd favourite on not only their tours but the festival dates too. This album will win awards & hearts equally, so all other bands, please take note... Elbow are back... be afraid... be very afraid. ~
Amaze :)
I'm on the cd :) I'm in 6 songs!! I'm part of the Halle Youth Choir who recorded with Elbow :) amazing music had an awesome time :) yay xx
Really disappointed
Eagerly awaited this album after loving Seldom seen kid and others, but my god what a flimsy thin sound and irritating noises and repetition... Bitterly disappointed on first couple of listens. Can only hope it's a grower as going to see them later this month. And having now found out they are supported by The Villiagers - also dreadful (saw them support the tindersticks last year) am feeling v concerned...what happened to that lovely rich sound of 'on a day like this' or 'the bones of you' or 'loneliness of a tower crane driver ' what has happened? Has half the band walked out?
