Blake doesn't get bashed!

Occupying the ground somewhere between Badly Drawn Boy and Mull Historical Society, Blake is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter with a clearly home-grown approach to music making. The sound is somewhat lo-fi, but I suspect this is due to a limited production budget rather than a deliberate attempt to sound cool. The songs are stylistically diverse. Track one is country, the next sixties power pop, the third indie rock. We get a John Barry style harmonica instrumental, a love song about a girl with blue eyes reminiscent of The Magic Numbers and a manic stylophone solo on the back of a dirty slide guitar riff. A couple of the songs are lightweight and forgettable, but on the whole I was pleasantly surprised by the originality on offer here. Time Out
