Finally A New Music Genre

After seeing them out perform Los Campesinos in Liverpool, I was disheartened to find they had nothing recorded and no website to follow. What a clever move this proved to be. Disbanding the popular media made them more exciting, and when I saw they were to play Liverpool again, I bought tickets straight away.

Iselt mainly focus on the percussion, hammering guitar rhythms, deep bass and incredible synth. Expect them to run around the crowd screaming in your face as a warm up. They also enjoy beating up parts of the stage and supports in the room while still managing to keep the rhythm going. In the crowd, you really feel part of the gig, especially when they step off the stage and play their instruments while doing what can be best described as epileptic drug induced tribal dancing.

Upon hearing they had an album out, I was apprehensive as I couldn’t imagine this live performance being transferred into a studio.

It did turn out to be different from their live performance, yet I still love it in a different way. Celebrate This Place is very trance like with a snippet of Kratwerk thrown in. Next Iris sets a heavier tone to them, maybe a weaker link in the album. One of These Worlds reminds me of a late Sunday afternoon, its something that you find yourself relaxing and nodding along to. The track ends with a screaming guitar and carnival style synth. Holly and Jasmine remind me of their live performances, these two are very simple and full of percussion. I left the best until last: Rowan. It could never be played in that way live and the ambient synth is much clearer. This track shows they can be so diverse and do need to be recorded to let loose this other side of them.

At the gig, I bought Celebrate This Place and Wimmy. Two very different albums. Islet have to do things unlike others, so you can buy vinyl which you can listen to before the mp3 downloads are released. Not a CD in sight. The vinyl also come with free mp3 downloads.

If you want to catch on (hopefully) the next wave of music, this band will be at the forefront. This is probably what they don’t want, but as a fan I’d love more bands to be this experimental.

Oh and turn up your bass right up. I love those deep notes. They do now have a website which Abe told me was his own creation. He is one cool guy.

Biography

Formed: 2009 in Wales, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Rising seemingly out of nowhere, Welsh quartet Islet initially shunned the usual route of gaining exposure through social networking sites and the internet in general, preferring instead that their profile be built around word of mouth, their incredible live performances, and their own 'zine The Isness. Formed in 2009 when brothers Mark and John Thomas started jamming with Emma Daman after their previous band Attack + Defend had played dates with Daman's, the trio decided they wanted to be in a band...
