iTunes Review

Florence + the Machine deliver one baroque-pop anthem after another on Ceremonials. Featuring majestic, theatrical arrangements centered on Florence Welch’s remarkable vocals, this is a bolder and more dramatic offering than their debut, Lungs. Booming percussion, strings, echoing keyboards, and big guitars create a towering platform of sound from which Welch emotes with a fury. Her powerful voice erupts amid a gospel choir on “Shake It Out”, “What the Water Gave Me”, and “Leave My Body”, while tribal drums fuel “No Light, No Light” and “Heartlines”. Even the relatively subdued “Lover to Lover” builds to a spine-tingling crescendo. A distinctly British blend of Celtic, goth, and neo-soul influences, Ceremonials is a thickly layered and orchestral production that practically demands a visceral response from the listener. Fans will be blown away.

Outstanding return

Any initial fears of a somewhat lacklustre return by the flame haired beauty have truly been swept aside by this simply phenomenal album. Despite being a relatively quiet genre, Floflo is well and truly top of the chamber choir pop group. As astonishing a debut as 'Lungs' was, 'Ceremonials' feels much more mature and definitely less frenzied (for better or worse). A much more grown up sound lends itself to the harmony and melody and Florence's unparalleled chorus smashing ability. Her pipes are certainly as strong as the organ that darts in and out of the shadowy undertones of the album, creating a perfect aesthetic for a Florence that was recently visited by the Ghost of her late-grandmother. Simply a brilliant album by a brilliant artist - if this doesn't get to Number by this time next week, some serious words must be had. Florence has done what everyone thought was impossible... She has topped herself (in the good way). Well done Flo.

AMAZING

I'm speechless! This is one of the best albums of the year! YOU GO FLORENCE! :D bedroom hymns should be on the standard version of the album because it's one of my favourite songs she's ever done, but it's still an amazing album and I'm going to have it on repeat for a long long long long time :D congratulations!
Favourite tracks - spectrum, shake it out, only if for a night, never let me go, no light no light, heartlines, all this and heaven too and bedroom hymns.
A MUST BUY!

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Hailing from South London, Florence Mary Leontine Welch writes songs that occupy the same confessional territory as gossip-loving, genre-bending contemporaries like Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, Adele, and Lily Allen and the moody, classic art rock of Kate Bush, blending pop, soul, and baroque arrangements into a sound that earned the young artist considerable buzz in 2007. Managed by the Camden-based DJ duo the Queens of Noize and backed by a rotating lineup of musicians, Florence + the Machine released...
