Inspiring
All too often poetry readings are either dull, slow, affairs that remind you of turgid uninspiring school-days, or horribly rushed affairs with all the intonations in entirely the wrong places where the reader is more concerned with their voice than the work itself.
This production breaks that mold perfectly.
Miriam Margolyes brings a real, warm, human heart to these readings, filing them with life and love.
It is a testament to her, and director Barnaby Edwards, that even the famous and oft sung 'In The Bleak Midwinter' sound new and make you forget the hymn version.
Forget the cliche Houseman 'stop all the clocks' - for the passing of a friend should be covered by Song (When I Am Dead) which Miriam brings smiles and tears to your face with her gentle reading.
The highlight of the production must be Goblin Market; Miriam's reading is such that the you stop hearing a poem, and more a normal story as you are drawn into a world of overt sexuality, temptation, and redemption as we hear the tale the tale of two sisters, the evils of goblins' fruits, and the power of sisterly love.
Special note should be made for the music of Howard Carter. Used sparingly to introduce each piece, the mood is set in place and never it intrudes into the production. The suite in the final track, Saints And Sinners, is a perfect coda for Miriam's readings.
Goblin Market is the real treat here!
Miriam Margolyes is the perfect voice for bringing Rossetti's work to life. The shorter pieces may make a good 'try before you buy' but the highlight of this album is Goblin Market - buy the full album and you will not be disappointed.
