iTunes Review
My Morning Jacket is one of the most intriguing rock bands of the 21st century because there is nothing they won’t try. Their unusual mix of acoustic guitars and space grooves, of brass bands and subtly modulating keyboards make them an unclassifiable group. The only way to understand what they do is to hear them firsthand and see what sense it makes to you. Circuital is a much more carefully produced album than their previous catalog. There is still deep reverb from time to time, but it is no longer a catchall technique. “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” may be the most straightforward piece they’ve recorded, an acoustic ballad with strings that evokes the early 1970s. “Outta My System” crests on a pop groove inspired by the Beach Boys. “Holdin’ On to Black Metal” has a funky kick that’s punctuated with a fuzztone guitar. “First Light” flows with an impressive gait. “You Wanna Freak Out” has a sashaying innocence. “Victory Dance” strips things down in the chorus to where the each note is held out for maximum effect. The iTunes LP includes a video documentary of the making of the album and handwritten lyrics.

With the amount of airplay and praise they are receiving on stations like 6 Music it is possible that My Morning Jacket are finally going to come to the attention of a wider spectrum of listeners here in the UK. This is not a review of this new album, since i have only heard 'Circuital' and 'Holdin On To...' from it, but based on those two cuts it seems as though they have yet again put another fantastic album together, and one that will not disappoint long-time fans, but will probably appeal to more people in the process.
It's a weird thing but when i've followed a band a long time (MMJ have been releasing stuff since about 1998), i feel a little bit apprehensive when they suddenly look like they are close to breaking through into the mainstream. On the one hand it is nice for them to become more familiar to more people but you also wonder whether they will shed some of their cult appeal that is part of the charm of liking a band that few are aware of.
The two tracks i mentioned above took me a couple of listens to adjust to, but I now think that they are a perfect summary of most of what MMJ has released up to this point. And so if you are new to them and come to love this album then you have the huge added bonus of now discovering all the textures of the intense, panoramic, yearning and soulful music that is their back catalogue. Your ears are in for a treat.
Slow slow tune
I heard slow slow tune on American Dad! and I just had to download this album. A brilliant album. Top notch!
What an Album
Something is different this time around, listened to the album all the way through a few times, and unlike with most of their other albums, the tracks don't stand out as much from each other as they do on say Z, and the whole album just washes over you, maybe it's because their are less hooks in every part of the songs, I'm not to sure.
Although this isn't instantly better than what's come before it, it is definitely refreshing and really really well done, I can't stop listening to Out of My System, and I just think this is generally going to be a massive grower of an album, these guys are the best popular musicians in the world over the last 10 years IMO, the only band that can seriously hold a candle to the big bands of the 60's-70's, that whole west coast sunny American country-tinged rock sound is dealt out in thick slabs of horn drenched musical loveliness.
In summary I think this is a Super Furry Animals type album, but done by a much better band, which is nice for me cause I always liked the Super Furrys but thought they lacked something, along comes MMJ and maybe shows them where they went wrong, and deliver an amazing album. Also MMJ seem to succeed where Kings of Leon have failed in doing heart felt epic guitar rock, yes, these guys really are the type of band that can keep delivering and not sell-out or give in.
