iTunes Review
After the stylistic detours of In the Zone and the halfhearted comeback of Blackout, Circus refocuses Britney Spears’ energies on what she does best: sexy, icy dance music. Though sometimes positioned as the successor to Madonna, Britney has always been more of an American answer to Kylie Minogue. Her voice doesn’t have the flexibility necessary to play among Madonna’s myriad musical styles, but when it comes to the throbbing pulse of “Circus”, “Shattered Glass”, and “Radar”, Britney’s cat-like come-ons work wonders. While Blackout gave the impression that Britney’s heart wasn’t entirely in it, she now sounds like she’s having a blast. Every trance-inducing dancefloor beat invites its eager listeners to design their own choreography routine. She even manages to put a twist on the same old sound with the futuristic disco funk of “Lace and Leather”. While not all of Circus offers the head rush of the whip-cracking “Womanizer”, Britney’s fifth album shows the reigning superstarlet getting her groove back.

Great CD on the road to recovery.
I wouldn't call Britney Spears' resurgence as a stable human being a "comeback" as such. She is still clearly deep in the throngs of a difficult period of her life, where she struggles for control of her own affairs and in terms of her career, stands to prove a lot to the world, and despite dance rehearsal videos showing Britney killing the lights on the dancefloor, her promotional appearences have been exceptionally short, sometimes under-par and always mimed. Still, for every weak Britney appearance theres another with a flicker of the fun and excitement and charisma that makes her a star not only in her appearance, but also from her croaky, distinctive vocals, and of course, theres a new CD called Circus out - one which reminds the world why we fell in love with Britney Spears. Circus marks a return from the dark, sexy, fighting talk of last years excellent but disturbing "Blackout" to a more happy path for Spears. It feels like this is the true sequel to 2003's "In the Zone", which went too far into slow, down-tempo Norweigan club sounds. She may be slammed for miming, but her control over the work she does is evident here. She's not afraid to take risks with the pop music she creates, be it cheeky play's on words (If You Seek Amy) with a dated but exciting riff, or angry statements of self-awareness ("Is that money in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" - Kill the Lights) or maybe even weird, different pop dance tracks which are the apex of the CD (Mannequin). She even indulges in the odd ballad, which you'll either love or skip immediately (Out from Under, My Baby). Best of all though, Spears mixes up the tempos and sounds, and avoids the only real failing of her last CD - where the grinding, banging club songs all seemed to haze into one epic riff. Her vocals range from heavily proccessed to nearly untouched on the CD, and it's clear Spears has opted for vocal processing to complement the type of music she's creating, much in the same way as Rihanna does with her Disturbia sound. Already fans of the CD are all arguing over which song's are best, but that's a good thing, because it shows that Britney knows how to satisfy a broad range of fans, from the girls interested in her human side, to the boys who like the sexy vixen within her, to her gay fanbase who enjoy the fun, rompy tastelessness she injects with a wink and a smile into songs which, without Spears' vocals, would have floundered. There are low points though. Out from Under and My Baby are good natured ballads which sound completely generic and disposable, and Radar was a great track, when it was on her last album. It's presence clearly the result of contractual do-welling by powerful producers Bloodshy and Avant who've created some of Britney's finest tracks. Britney Spears is back on the scene, and she has a long way to go, but perhaps it's clever that she's drawing out her comeback as a pro-longed event, over one, maybe two cds, because one things for sure, Britney Spears has the whole world watching her, and before her wild antics the interest in her was flailing. Perhaps showing a little humanity has been that catalyst which turned Britney from superstar into icon.
Britney's Circus comes to town...
...and she doesn't disappoint! After her previous album Blackout, which was hugely underrated and overshadowed by her personal life. Britney is back (better than ever) with Circus. What she has done is basically taken elements from her previous albums In The Zone and Blackout and created one amazing album! It has everything you would want and more, dancey, catchy songs and some impressive, surprising ballads. All the tracks are single worthy (like Blackout and even includes Radar from that album), but stand out tracks are: Womanizer (obviously), Circus (her new single and addictive as ever), Out From Under (her best ballad since Everytime), Kill the Lights, If You Seek Amy (very clever), Unusual You (Eerie ballad), Blur (An updated Early Mornin') and Lace and Leather (saucy Spears). To be honest people will love something on this album! The album is amazing and Britney shows how it's done. The Princess of Pop is back. Oh and if you do get the chance to buy the Deluxe version of Circus, the bonus tracks are amazing! Rock In Me, Phonography and Amnesia are to die for.
