Customer Reviews

Classic songs performed live by the voice and heart of Supertramp.

These wonderful songs, for so long in our consciousness, are revisited by their composer and vocalist in a stripped down performance that takes us closer to the soul of the original composition. For many, Roger Hodgson is the voice of Supertramp having sung and composed most of the well known hits. For the past few years Hodgson has been playing his music to an appreciative audience in many venues across the globe. This album is a collection of the most well known and loved songs that he performs on his own or with his cohort, Aaron MacDonald, a Canadian multi-instrumentalist.

Without the lush Supertramp production, but enhanced by a simpler arrangement, these songs come to life and sounds as fresh as they did thirty or so years ago. It is hard to imagine an enhancement on the original recordings, and while these don’t necessarily improve on those fantastic records, these recordings, taken as they were from various shows on a recent tour, give an excellent representation of the live performance you will experience at a Roger Hodgson show.

There are some stunning songs on this album and I particularly loved the version of ‘Only Because of You’ and ‘Lord is it Mine?’ I can’t commend this superb collection highly enough. Sometimes less is more, and this enables you to get closer to the heart of these beautiful compositions.

Classics Live

I have been listening to Roger sing with Supertramp since I was a teenager....always loved Breakfast in America, Logical Song and definitely Give a Little Bit.
....then I went to see Roger perform solo, accompanied only by his companion - Aaron MacDonald - between them they fill the stage!
....then I went to see Roger perform with an orchestra and choir - exquisite! Very emotional....
....then I went to see Roger perform with his band - many times!!! Two hours of singing 'til my voice packed in! Danced 'til my legs ached. Laughed with the people next to me who I'd never met and hugged them several times!! (sorry - you didn't seem to mind!)
It doesn't get better than this... Roger's voice is instantly recognisable but now it has taken on a richness and confidence that makes his concerts a great night out.
So do yourself a favour... get along to a concert, but if you can't - get a copy of Classics Live, close your eyes and imagine you're there....!

Best known for his stint fronting art pop hitmakers Supertramp, Roger Hodgson was born in Portsmouth, England, on March 21, 1950. He co-founded Supertramp in 1969, serving as their primary singer and songwriter for 13 years. Originally funded by Dutch millionaire Stanley August Mieseages, the group lost his patronages after their first two albums failed to generate much interest. However, 1974's Crime of the Century was a major hit, launching the radio favorites "Dreamer" and "Bloody Well Right."...
