Customer Reviews

Too good for a mere five starts.

For those whose like their music short and to the point, do not buy this (or indeed any other Yes) album. This is an unhurried, meandering wander through strange, unusual, abstract landscapes. The music is mind-bogglingly complex but is played with such faculty and skill that the desired effect is never lost. The start and end of each cycle (I deliberately do not use the word ‘song’) only serve as a reference points. Each cycle containing a myriad other pieces and segments of music which combine to form the whole. Too many highlights to mention here but check out Rick Wakeman’s awesome keyboard solo fifteen minutes into the opening track (not often I say that!), the acoustic guitar harmonics that usher in ‘You And I’ or the grin inducing opening riff on 'Siberian Khatru'. ‘Fragile’ is well worth looking into, but ‘Close…’ is almost too good to be worth a meagre five star rating!

If Carlsberg Made Prog Rock Albums...

...It'd probably be Close To The Edge by Yes! Such a beautiful and majestic collection of melodies and rhythms that leave you feeling filled to the brim with joy. This is one album I can listen to time and time again and still find something new and exciting about it! But it now you won't be disappointed!

Pure class

I first heard this album when I was 13 (30 years ago) and its still in my top ten albums. It is like nothing else and although you might be a little baffled initially, it gets better with every play. The words make little or no sense but somehow they fit the music perfectly. Jon Anderson's voice is like pure crystal, Rick Wakeman's keyboards are astounding and overall it is a thoroughly satisfying piece of work.

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer withered away commercially after the mid-'70s, and Genesis...
