iTunes Review

Richard Hawley’s day job has been guitarist for Pulp, but the Sheffield, England native now spends his nights working on nocturnal solo albums that wrap themselves in the dreams of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Scott Walker, and Lee Hazlewood. (He and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker contributed a track to a Hazelwood tribute album). With a baritone perpetually in anguish over broken love, dead love, bittersweet love – anything other than happy love, really – Hawley, like Chris Isaak, shifts to decades past without resorting to complete nostalgia. He allows the strings to engulf him, the piano to sway him, and the ballad to play him. Coles Corner, he claims, is an actual corner in his hometown where, since 1905, people have come to have their social needs met. His note-taking pays off as he swings through a sensitive croon, “Darlin’ Wait for Me,” a countrified “I Sleep Alone,” and the near-art song of “The Ocean.” Perfect for a rainy night or an overcast afternoon.

A Modern Masterpiece

You should file Richard Hawley in between Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, his music is that good. This album brims with bittersweet angst, a like of which modern songwriters can scarcely muster. Like a fine wine Richard Hawley has fermented into one of this countries great undiscovered jewels. If you love music and appreciate it's delicate intricacys this album is a must or if you are wanting to try something new, take my advice, get this album it is going to be a true british classic.

Deeply Satisfying

I've been looking for something like this for years. Beautiful, urban melancholia with just the right level of self-pity. New songs with the quality of cherished classics. It try not to listen to it too often for fear of wearing it out.

A masterclass, Surely The Mercury Prize Awaits....!

A beautifully crafted album that just gets better and better everytime you hear it. 11 Songs of romantic heartfelt decedance, high points are "Hotel Room", "Just Like The Rain", "The Ocean" and "Coles Corner". Think of the hollywood movies that are 1950's based and the beautiful lovesongs that linger in the background, normally when someone puts a nickel in the jukebox, well this is what you get with Coles Corner. A timeless collection of intelligent songwriting that will get underneath your skin and fuel your emotions. Lets hope that it takes away the forthcoming Mercury Prize that it deserves...!
