iTunes Review

After a number of singles and EPs, California’s Best Coast finally released their anticipated full-length debut, appropriately — we might add — in the middle of summer. Beth Cosentino’s voice, swathed in reverb, sounds like sunshine, and her washes of hazy power chords cascade and glisten like water in freefall. Band mate Bobb Bruno (also a solo performer and producer) helps shape the songs with additional guitar, bass and drums (Ali Koehler from Vivian Girls has since joined the band). These rich, purely pop tunes evoke not only surf rock of the ‘60s, but girl groups and doo-wop of the late ‘50s. The naked wistfulness of tracks like “Boyfriend” and “Crazy for You”, the classic surf licks on songs like “When I’m With You”, and the naïve, retro-styled lyrics throughout (“mama always told me there’d be boys like you”, “I want you so much”) all ring with instant familiarity, and this purist vintage approach works. It’s the unabashed co-opting of pop music from a simpler time that makes Crazy for You so appealing.

Grungey 60's chic!

Very good album, a throw back to the grunge era with a slight 60's sound to Beth's voice!

One of the best

Albums this summer i think, great pop tunes with sleaze cool all over it and haunting vocals.

Get's a bit samey after a bit but "When i'm with you" is an anthem for teenage love and lust..."boyfriend" is just cool.

It's great!

Thanks!

A former child actress, Cosentino had started writing songs in her teens, and had garnered a strong online following by the time she was 17 thanks to a handful of squeaky-clean pop tunes she made available on her MySpace page under the nom de teen pop Bethany Sharayah. "I had interest from major labels," she said in a 2009 interview with PopSense. "And it...
